Have come up with a name, but need help!
« on: May 07, 2007, 02:57:35 PM »
I have decided on a name for my Shifting Lands Pirate Ship. I just need some help because I need the name in French.

The ship will be called... drumroll please...

The Lead Adventure

Her captain will be Professor Aleksander Bews, eminent naturalist turned privateer.

Her First Mate will be Lt. Marcus Grimm, capable of heroic feats with quite a famous lineage

Her Rated Hand will be Seaman Polynikes. An expert artillerist as long as he knows the rules of engagement.

My crude schoolboy French would "lead" me to:

L'Aventure de Plomb

I am already planning a mutiny.

Just wait until you meet the rest of the scurvy sea dogs that sail with you.

As far as I'm aware, the adjectival form of "plomb" (lead) is "de plomb" or "en plomb."

@Plynkes: Yes, I think you´re right. Sorry, somehow I got "leaded fuel" stuck in my mind. And that certainly is NOT a good thing.

Mr. Christian? Cool. He can help me with the mutiny, as he has experience in that type of thing.

Off to Tahiti Nui for the breadfruit and bare boobs, then. Capital!

"Ah say, matey, ah´ll have ta break out ye cat o´ninetails!"

And I won´t degrade myself to "shiver me timber" jokes, especially not in a Tahiti context.

Thanks for the French thinking, but i'm not sure it is a good idea, cause "Lead adventure" is almost "untranslated" ! I'm so sorry...

Literally, Plynkes got it : it's l'aventure de plomb (for the adventure in lead) or l'aventure du plomb (for the adventure of the lead) but it means absolutely nothing.
"De plomb" or "en plomb" suggest something very heavy, and not at all exciting. "Un sommeil de plomb" for exemple, is a very deep sleep.
And Chris' translation is even worse  ! "Plombé" (leaded) is a familiar word to indicate "to be in a bad way" (as if you had recieved buckshot. ) A movie, for exemple, can be "plombé" by a bad actor.

So, I can't think to nothing better than le plomb d'aventures, who means very little, but at least sounds "a bit" poetic, in the way of a pub sign. (And "le plomb" could suggest the "weight" of the ship...)

Anyway, it will be good to know the mind of the others Frensh-speaking "aventuriers du plomb"

Hope that help (despite my bad English),
Matt
