Robin Hood, Robin Hood ...
« on: February 08, 2010, 05:57:49 PM »
He called the greatest archers to a tavern on the green.
They vowed to help the people of the King.
They handled all the trouble on the English country scene,
But still found plenty of time to sing!

Back on my introductory thread, I promised Bako that I'd post some Robin Hood pictures, so here they are.

Most of my actual Sherwood gaming has been with the venerable Airfix sets in 1/76 polythene.

But I'm gradually re-doing them in 28mm.  How gradually?  Well, these Qualiticast Merrie Men sat in my lead pile for about 10 years.  I don't think they've made any of this range this century.

This is the Qualiticast character group:

Their equivalents from Citadel ...

... and Grenadier:

These two were promo figures:

And this one doesn't really fit, but I couldn't resist a bit of Dork Tower.

Now it's on to the villains.  Just another couple of decades' work at my present rate!

Back from the dead, almost.

There's quite a few round here...

Some good looking figures there.
The Airfix ones are pure nostalgia, but better painted than my memories of them.

As for not cast this century, are Qualiticast still in business ?

He had a fight on a log
With a bloke called Little Jog
He made our Robin look a proper twit
Cos he upped with his pole, scored a perfect goal,
And left poor Robin lying in the ... water

Oh. My. God.

Haven't seen these for what feels like 100 years - certainly my entire adult lifetime (although I did see they were available again... )

Bet they don't still come in emerald green polythene though  :)

Steve;
Nice looking figures. I really love that era. Robin Hood, Knights, damsels in distress. It was one of my favourite eras growing up as a kid, and it still has a soft spot in my heart. I even have the 2 1/2 inch set of figures from Corn Flakes when they used to put cool toys in them.

By the way, I am not sure if you were aware or not, but Miniature Service Center in California has a really nice and reasonably extensive line of 40mm Robin Hood figures. It has been growing quite a bit of late. Lots of figures to choose from.

Huzzah! Excellent.

I actually didn't know of any Robin Hood miniatures besides the Citadel ones, so I had to know.

And this one doesn't really fit, but I couldn't resist a bit of Dork Tower.

If you collect Robin Hood miniatures there are three more lines available these days:

Wargames foundry:
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/LTDEDIT/2/index.asp
Blue Moon manufacturing
http://www.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/index.php?cat_id=26
and NorthStar:
http://www.northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=39&page=1

The latter two I have not seen them, since I have only the foundry's one. Hope some day make a painting!

Interesting to see these. Maybe a year ago I bought some CoC investigators on eBay (from a LAFfer's sales list?) and entered a small bid for merry men as well. Well, I won, and started to wonder what I got. It took quite a lot of detective work to learn about Qualiticast. I had never heard about it before.

Characterful minis. Nice to see them painted. Unfortunately mine are still in the CoC box. Why can't I have a few extra hours in my evenings?

I almost bought the Dork Tower minis too, but surprisingly managed to resist the "It must be mine!" instinct.

I too had a bunch of those old Airfix Robin Hood figures. Had several Ancient & Medievil armies built out of them plus some old 20mm metals. Used them for playing D&D when it first came out so long ago. I have long since built up to 25mm then 28mm.

fastrolfus - I haven't seen Qualiticast at any shows for a while now, come to think of it.  But that may be because they are in the South of England, and I moved North.  The TMP Manfacturers' Directory entry (http://theminiaturespage.com/man/qualiticast/) doesn't list a web-site, e-mail address or telephone number, which isn't promising.

Hitman - I have a few of those 40mm figures, but I am trying not to spread my collection over too many different figure sizes these days.  So it may be a while before my 10mm Pendraken Robin Hood gets any company.

argsilverson - I have a pack from the Blue Moon range on my painting table at the moment.  The Foundry Robin Hood "collection" is uninspiring and overpriced, but there is a much better pack under a pseudonym in the range of Saxons that Matthew Bickley sculpted for them: if it wasn't for the postage rates, I'd buy it.  The North Star range seems to be based on the recent BBC series, which I hated so much that it delayed my whole Robin Hood 28mm project by three years!  So maybe I'll leave those for a while.

pierrebi - The Warrior range is pretty rough, but some of them could fill out a large Merrie (a middle english word for "entourage",  "retinue" or "gang", apparently).  There's also a 25mm range by Gladiator (now Black Hat) made up of oddly proportioned early Martin Baker sculpts.  And Friar Tuck does feature in the third season of the BBC series - he's a black guy who has apparently discovered the multi-gym eight hundred years early.
