Other rules for Aeronef ships
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:11:13 PM »
Hi all

I hope you can help as I posted this on TMP but I figured I would get some better replies here :) We've played a couple of games of Aeronef and love the ships but we find that the rules are too basic and generic. We were thinking of using other rules or converting the ship stats to another ruleset.

Any suggestions or ideas? I have SGoM and Ironclads and Ether flyers and they look pretty good but i'd like to see what else there is.

I was also thinking about converting the ship stats to something like Full Thrust or a naval game such as Grand Fleets.

I found this old post on Full Thrust for Aeronef ships. Did anyone manage to find the rules for Full thrust as I'd be very keen to see them?

I thought Full Thrust was available as a download from GZG (Ground Zero Games)

There is a new set of rules coming out soon called Leviathans.

The initial pictures of the miniatures/ships look awesome.

I have download the taster rules but haven't given them a go yet, but mechanics look interesting, more complex than Aeronef.

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

Hi

fastolfrus
Yes I have Full Thrust but I was looking for a modification to use Aeronef ships with the FT rules.

Fuzzywuzzieswiflasers
Thanks for the link, I've seen those and they look awesome.

I also found these rules and they look pretty cool and maybe what i'm after. Also they are free!

If you have the 2nd Aeronef book Sky Captains Handbook there are more advanced rules in there like boarding, Ramming, Morale etc..

Become who you really are... [/i]

Hi

Yes we have the Captain handbook and also some extra rules from the interweb and Ragornak mag, but the basic rules leave us a bit bored.

Thanks anyway and I'll keep looking

Kieran, there is "Full Steam: 1889" which is a Martian conversion of the original FT rules. Available here:

http://paleotechnic.com/1889/ft1889.shtml

FT is available free online here:

I hope that's what you are after  :D

aeronefs is pre-dreadnoughts in space/air..

the problem with the aeronef rules is that the basic set is too BLAND and doesnt capture the mad variety and experimentation and rapid technological change that was naval technology between the civil war and world war 1.

there are of course pdf expansions you can buy for Aeronef proper but frankly it should be bundled

Full steam would be my bet, simple and a design system that lets you experiment with your own designs.

Leviathans has lovely production values but they lost me when the designer told me via email that they would not be releasing a design system per se but a "customization" system.. ie youre locked into the ships and units we design and sell.

Hey Bob!

I see you are from Melbourne. I am playing Gaslight next Friday at the Nunawading Wargames Association Mitcham venue. We will have a few 28mm aeronef vehicles on the table. You're most welcome to come along.

Cheers

The funny thing, but I like that Aeronef Rules are basic. Because its very easy to make MASSIVE Aerial battles without being to deep in detail. But I realize that some players like more detailed rules :)

I think that is a key point to all of Wessex Games' productions.
Their aim is to make rules which are simple enough that if a rule problem comes up, you can find it in just a few seconds and have it sorted in a minute.
And it is simple enough to not get confused, not have arguments and it allows you to change the rules as you see fit.

I don't play any of their VSF games, but I play all their fantasy ones. They all fall under that category.
Usually, if you do good book-keeping, you could play huge games very easily.

Good point - Aeronef or FT/FSteam are better for big battles using Aeronef models, but the Space 1889 Sky Galleons of Mars/Cloudships and Gunboats rules are better for small numbers of larger scale ships. All are good playable rules.

Yep have to agree, nice and simple makes it easier to get a few games in one night.

Plus not many games give you a build your own Ship system like Aeronef does.
