WIP toy castle revamping - new pics 2-21!
« on: February 15, 2010, 03:43:24 PM »
Thought I'd put this WIP up here. It's part of that cheap castle kit, that I'm turning into empire-themed scenery, with the addition of a few bobs and bits.

The box:

The central building, with addition of statues, shield icons and scratchbuilt doors. Gaps were filled:

The first lick of paint (roof section and torches to be added). I really like how the texture came out with a simple drybrush.

That is awesome so far. I love the doors. Are they made of wood or plasticard?

Yes i must say I'm pretty impressed, the first photo doesn't make the model look like much, but the paint and extra details (not least the very nice doors!) really transform it. Where did you get it from? And I noticed on the box art that the walls are hollow at the back, any plans as to how to fill them?

Operator5: the doors are made of wood with added details (doorknockers from card, wire and greenstuff), though in the future I will use plasticard

dijit: I got it from a toystore (local chain: Bart Smit). As they were cheap, I got extra sets so I can use it for the back of the walls. The back of the crenelations (sp?) and the like will get filled with spackle and then sanded smooth.

Col.Stone: I was pleasantly surprised. the texture takes paint very well.

Blimey! That works really well. As Dijit said, I didn't think it was going to be any good. Looking forward to the finished job.

I'm a bit hesitant whether I should retyle the roof, or paint it as is and see what it gives (the red bit top center).

Cheap?  How cheap is it?

That is looking GREAT!

I had this huge, super detailed castle as a child.  It came with multi color, multi part knights of high quality, and had a huge "rock base", of maybe 1 foot high, and 2.5'x2.5' square.  A detailed ground floor, with dungeon ladder to access the lowest level (within the rock base) and very detailed castle walls and tower walls.)   I don't know what happened to it?   >:(

It was expensive for a toy even in like 1970, I know that.  (was the Sears Catalog's "star attraction" that Christmas.

If you're thinking of restyling the roof, why not paint it first and then decide after you see if a simple repaint will suffice.

maybe go over the roof with a fine sandpaper to give it some texture?
iirc it's very smooth right?
