Lledo vs. Matchbox - what's the go?
« on: February 16, 2010, 06:44:43 AM »
I've just looking at - and admiring! - what people are using for their Interwar civilian vehicles, and it comes down to either Lledo Days Gone, and Matchbox Models of Yesteryear.

However, it appears that the Lledo ones are 1/60th and I'd say that's a bit small for 28mm (despite it being closer to 1/56th or O scale)... however the Matchbox ones are 1:43 (or was that 1:48) and this might be a tad big.

Needless to say, I'm confused!  o_o

Please help!

EDIT: This will also be put into the Scale-O-Matic thread so that it has some permanence!

If it were my choice, I'd go with the Lledo.  Like you say, it's much closer to 1/56 than the others.  I really don't like the oversize look of the 1/48 scale models and the 1/43's are even worse.  (Just to 'clarify', European 'O' is 1/43, while in North America it's 1/48.)

If you look at the scales as lengths, you get a better idea of the difference.
1/56 - 1 inch = 4.66 feet
1/60 - 1 inch = 5 feet
1/48 - 1 inch = 4 feet
1/43 - 1 inch = 3.58 feet

You can see that the first two are only out by about 4'' while the others range from about 8'' to nearly 1.5 feet difference.  I would rather be slightly smaller than over large.  Of course, the choice is yours.

From what I have seen the scales are not consistent. I use both Lledo and Matchbox happily beside my 28mm miniatures. There are also some Solido/Verem vehicles that can be useful. One of my favourites is a Citroen truck in 1/50.

That's quite helpful! Aside form trawling some threads on here, I have also acquired a useful photo:

It's a Y11 1938 Lagonda Drophead coupe from Matchbox.

It does look a bit big, but when you see a similar car in real life:

I assume the gent behind it quite close.

It's a big car!

The photo appears that this car would be about 3X the mans height. The measure of the model would make it well over 3X. Maybe just a little big.

I have a number of Lledo models in my collection and they fit in no problem with the 28mm figures. As for other makes, if it looks okay use it.

Might suit Chiltern then...  :)

I've just bid on a Lledo. I can see where this is going...  ::)

I'm just as confused.
Lledo do nice models but are really best for true 25mm.
The Yesteryear trucks work well as they are smaller due to Box-size variants.
There's also Corgi to consider. I use their model T types.
Sloppy Jallopy and similar are right sized but so much dearer than diecast, and not as satisfying to turn to our dark art!

The height is usually the main thing - if a car is long it doesn't matter much, but that blue car in the photo only comes up to the pedestrian's elbow in height.

Ah yes! The Russian site! I couldn't work it out yesterday, so thanks for extracting the useful information.

I'm going to get some Matchbox trucks too, just to see.

I think the Lledo days gone diecast cars work well.

The original Lledo models were bought from Matchbox, so they are both similar in style.

Both are made in "Fit the Box" size so scale can vary alot

My preference is for the Lledo Days Gone vehicles.

They readily available and as a result can be picked up for a reasonable price  - so there is no need to "go mental" buying all you can consume.

I managed to pick up 20 for £10 last summer incl. P&P.

I'm happily using both. The one thing I have noticed is how the Matchbox ones seem to be better made, and better models.

That said both are still cheap and easily found.
