Testors Dullcote and Humidity?
« on: May 15, 2007, 08:15:48 AM »
Hi
It's been raining quite a lot here in Berlin and there is no sign of the rain letting up over the next few days.

Meanwhile I have a few newly-painted figures to spray varnish with Testors Dullcote.  Problem is that I have heard that some people have had problems with the varnish frosting up when the humidity is high.

Would it be safe to spray varnish when the humidity is standing at around 60%?

If it's too rainy, I like to varnish my figures in the bathroom and use a hairdryer on them immediately afterwards. Never had any problems  :)
I was there the day that Horus fell.

Where I live it is seldom happens but I've noticed the problem a few times, more often in the case when priming turns grainy under humid conditions. I do not know of a practical solution for this so that hairdryer tip is useful.

I saw an article on HirsArt about a guy in Florida who had turned a consumer food dehydrator to a paint dryer. That's pretty desperate painting conditions. Sort of satisfies my mean, cold, northern personality that there are drawbacks to living in the tropics.

I live in a very humid climate.  Especially during the summer.  I've found that if I prime and or varnish in an air conditioned room I don't have that problem.  Fortunately my current studio has AC and I always let it run for a while when I'm going to spray anything.  On really humid days I do a test piece.
