My understanding of the opening battles was that they are very formalised almost like jousts or duels, rather than knock out the enemy ship the intention seems to be to knock over as many of the hapless rifleman your opponent has neatly arrayed upon his deck. With victory and honour going to the ship/squadron that has knocked over the most amount of riflemen.

Well that and they use massed artillery fire to knock enemies out of the sky. It something in-between napoleon age firing lines standing opposite each other and long battleship combat.
Oh and it does make sence for the riflemen not to have MG’s not every two man had a Gatling when they were in use now did they?

I think you are right. Because there is no need in volley firing in the sky. Just use ships big guns :)
I like these Last Exile series :)

I own the whole Last Exile series, got it on a random hunch and really enjoy it. :)

I love japanese animation even better than western one. Western animation is very well drawn (but now its only 3d) and is very entertaining. But You cant expect complicated story plots and realistic close to real life characters from it, because western animation is for kids or whole family. Japanese animation is like western movies - many genres and for many ages. From child to adult. I prefer to call some of animes not cartoons but animated movies.
For example try to call Hellsing or Evangelion a cartoon and show it to kids :) They will be scared and do not understand much.

By the way now I am wathing RahXephon after 4 years without anime. Great series.

I have seven Last Exile DVD's but lost my way with it so I do not even know how many more there are etc. Some wonderful inspiration amongst it all though for sure.
