I heard somewhere that French DVDs (despite having the same region code) and video tapes won't work on the Brit system. Anybody know the truth of the matter?

If you drop them a few times they will probably work

The preceding comment was made solely for shock value and has no basis in historical fact.

All region 2 dvds and game discs will work across Europe, as will 'British' video tapes  :)

Its worth keeping an eye on the BBC3 and 4 digital channels as they are running (and constantly re-running ) a series of programmes based on the Edwardians. They ran the Baden Powell programme several times but I have noticed that they pop up with repeats at unusual times.

One also worth watching is the Edwardians in colour which was a series of films and still shot by a Frencvh team of photographers who spent 7 years travelling the world and cataloging different nations, cultures etc. Some fantastic shots of colonial troops and unusual tribes

All European countries have the same VHS video format (PAL) and DVD region (2).

Three cheers for british television, BTW. It's the very best.

Really? I thought the French still clung to their old SECAM - when I bought my VCR in 1997, I specifically went for a machine that could read PAL, NTSC, and SECAM. The UK, however, uses PAL, which means that VHS tapes should be fully compatible (I´ve got a number of Animé tapes which work splendidly).

Just remember, chaps, the documentary is about Sir Robert Bathing-Towel's book "Scouting for Boys." His exploits at Mafeking, and the Perry diorama are only a small part of it.

Don't want you all to get too excited!

Shhh! Don't tell everyone! Carlos Guido Plynkes is the name I have adopted to avoid  the repeated assassination attempts by the likes of the OSS, MI6, Mossad, ODESSA and SMERSH.

Frankly it's becoming tiresome having to dodge sniper fire and poison-tipped umbrellas every day on my short walk to work. Looks like I need to go on the lam again for a while...

(Glad it got there okay. Hope the quality is watchable. I was a bit concerned as it played fine on the machine I taped it on, but when I tried it in another machine it was all over the place. Fingers crossed.)
