New image of the project

Added the modroc final layer to seal the thing a bit. Next stop, Iron powder!

Hopefully some of the craters can be seen, should add some cover.

I was going to base my landers around the style of waterborne diving bells

you need Cavorite Spheres...

That would be awsome. Where they come from?

A few new pics. Heres the Astroid with the first coating if iron powder painted on part of it:

At the moment not that great a magnetic atraction, but needs a few more coats.

Also, My attempt at a lander so far:

Its kinda diffrent to a diving bell, will keep working on it and see how it turns out.

AEG, that's cool man. Rivet-tastic.

I once had a rubber toy that looked like that, with sucker pads for feet!  ;D

Rich your landers shaping up nicely mate.

What a fantastic project.  You dont seem to be cutting corners in the process either, it should look great when finished,  Dont skimp on the photos!

Regarding lightweight tripods, I made some daft but quick and functional 28mm tripods a few years back out of items that I had lying around.  I used a polystyrene ball for the body, cuticle sticks for the legs and table tennis balls for the joints (plus some bits and pieces for detailing).

They werent works of art or anything but they are recognisable, functional and very light.  Maybe something similar might be light enough to remain attached to your asteroid.

If you plan to use drinking straws for tripod legs be careful.  I have a feeling that the stress on the straws caused by the magnetic feet attaching and detaching to the surface of the asteroid would break or crease the drinking straws pretty fast.

I may be wrong, but it is worth watching out for I think.

I cant wait to see what you come up with  8)

Just Finished off the 2nd coat of Iron powder and Now its dry decided to test the figures out:

THe figure just about held on, So another few coats should give them good adherence, even with a thin layer of paint to colour the asteroid.

I will try to add a howto guide to this thread as soon as so you can experement with your own asteroid if your want.

By the looks of things your choice to switch sizes was a good one, this way you will have something perhaps nearing the size of a small battle mat. Only it takes up les space horizontally! And the tactics of circling around will take on a whole new meaning, I’m sure.

I really feel I will need to copy this idea some time, its such a original idea it deserves to get plagiarized into oblivion!

Update: Onto layer 5 of iron paint. going to add 6 to be sure so one more to go, then i will do the top half!

In the mean time, every British task force needs a spaceship. Here is one of the VSF landers (not quite finished)

This holds an entire squad of men as they decend to the asteroids surface. The british will have three of these landers to launch the assult on the asteroid.

I should add the lander has a powerful magnet on its underside for attaching to the asteroid
