Great idea.
I am glad to see it working.
Looking forward to the first battle report.
Landers look cool as well.

I have been considering the forces that will be used in the game I have planned for this project. Heres my inital Break down of the sides. This is using GASLIGHT rules:

British:

1 * Commander
2 * rifle units (8 rifles, 1 sergent, 1 flag bearer)
2 * 6 pounder cannon teams (May turn into mortors)
1 * Gattling cannon team
1 * Tesla earthquake machine
3 * Landing Craft

Martians:

1 * Martian prince
2 * Rifle units (9 rifles 1 commander)
1 * Bow squad (9 bows, 1 leader)
2 * light cavarly  (4 regulars, 1 leader)
1 * Tripod

All weapons have unlimited range but operate on Line of sight. The only exeption of this is the british cannon/ morters and the martian bow. These will have a bombard ability of some sort that allows them to shoot at models beyond line of sight, but with inacuracies.

The mission will be for the British to escort the earthquake machine to a particular spot. defend it while it starts a resonence going, then high tail it back to the landers before the whole astroid shatters. All the while theres a time limit before the asteroid get to close to earth to be stopped (Armegeddon plot point).

Least thats the plan

Measure Twice
Cut once
Return to DIY store for new bit

Rich, the lander looks ruddy excellent.
You could mould that and cast it in plaster EASILY.

I'm just wondering if I could cast it in metal at uni...

The forces sound about right. I'm really looking forward to it.  :)

Have a look on Friday Rob. I will bring it in.

For my purposes, A plaster lander may be a liabilty due to meight and breakability.

Be intrested in a metal one though for regular gaming. Its made out of carboard and held together with PVA, so whether thats castible or not im not sure.

Planning to use it as a plot point in fridays game.

Plaster is likely to be too heavy for any that are strong enough to take gaming.

Depending on how much money you want to throw at it, you could try one of the foam eurethanes. They're very light and strong.

Cardboard and PVA? You'll want to seal it with a couple of varnish layers at least before trying to mold it, then I'd only recommend a gentle aircure rubber, nothing that will apply pressure.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Thanks for that.

Moat of my scratch built stuff is a mixture of PVA and cardboard or foamcore. Tend to find It suits me.

Quick update, all 6 coats of the bottom of the stroid are done. Just flipped the thing over to do the top. It looking good.

Just use the silicon rubber they have at uni, I would.

As for metal casting, I'd do a sand-cast. Not perfect, but still good.

If you're okay with the texture it gives, sand casting can be very efficient for simple shapes. I'm currently setting up a sand mold for foam casting a cliff face. I suspect it'll be the weekend before I get the chance to actually do it though.

Bear in mind the silicon rubber is liquid when poured and the cardboard is porous, hence my comment asbout sealing it.

Sand casting with metal gives no texture. You use very finely ground oil-based sand.
It's a very old way of casting (Victorian in fact) that my uni has happened to keep up for some reason.
I don't mean the whole press into sand and fill with plaster!

*Modify*
Yeah, with the silicon, might be worth sealing it. They say it doesn't stick to anything except more silicon, but it does take hold of some porous things.  ;)

Just give it a varnish.

*Modify Again* Oh and I could slip cast it, so you get a hollow cast of it. It would be lighter. Like a garden ornament.

I know you weren't talking about plaster  ;)
I've done some sand casting with iron and there was a definate texture to the finished metal. I don't mean sand embedded in it or anything like that, but it certainly wasn't smooth. Perhaps it wasn't fine enough.

Possibly. Might have been the shrinkage on the iron as well? I'm not sure!
We use aluminium or bronze usually. We have got facilities to use pewter as well.

The water based sand stuff often leaves a texture, the oil based stuff sticks together a bit better. Either way, it's a lot of work so when it doesn't work out, it sucks so much!

Now you mention it I think it was water based rather than oil, it's been a while.

Just popping back to topic.

Layer 3 of the tops just gone on. Need more PVA glue to finish this off though.

Ordered the majority of the models now. Need to get on and paint them up.

I am hoping to have some kind of battle report up some time in late may / June.

Will post a how to in the next few weeks as well.
