Actually, I use a white undercoat a lot of the time, with a thin black-brown wash 'wiped-off'.

But Argonor is right that I used a matt black car spray undercoat for these figures, drybrushed with Vallejo 'Flat Earth' to bring out the detail for painting - I find it just too difficult on the old eyes to paint on a pure black undercoat!

The highlighting process is much the same as that used by most people I think - I just tend to use more extremes, as Niels says.
You should also remember though, that owing to the miracle of digital photography, the colour intensity and contrast always comes up as a lot brighter and deeper in enlarged, on-screen images, than on the actual mini 'in the flesh'.

Thanks for the positive comments :)

I REALLY love this work. Its great that, while you do use brighter colors, the effect is still really badass and grungy.

Just curious, what colors did you use on the heavy armor that some of the gang are wearing?

Thanks, Argonor, and thanks, Captain - I like the idea of a light drybrush over black primer to bring up the detail. Sometimes it can be tricky to see, it's true. It's great to get tips like this, and to see such wonderful minis!

Ah, that's one of my favourite colours of the moment - it's a subtle pale blue-green in Anita's Craft Acrylic, called 'Ocean Blue'.
I don't normally like Anita's craft paints because they are gloopy and thinly pigmented, but this is such a nice versatile colour when mixed in with a bit of white  :)

Thanks! That is very good to know. I have this color! Really like the effect on the armor. I just painted up a platoon of PI Heavy infantry and am a bit disappointed that they turned out so dark, especially their armor. I think your color choice really makes it stand out without ruining its grey, military feel.

Good stuff!
