Suvla Bay Map?
« on: June 07, 2007, 11:20:26 AM »
Hello there.

I don't suppose anyone knows where I could lay my hands on a nice detailed map of Suvla Bay and the surrounding territory, do they? (If anyone can, there's one particular Lead Adventurer from Canberra, I'm guessing.)

I'm looking for terrain features called Hetman Chair, Kaslar Chair, and Azmak Dere and the area they would be found in. None of the maps in any of my books show these named features, as they don't go into enough detail. I'm assuming from the text of the book I'm looking at they would be somewhere inland in between Suvla Bay and ANZAC Cove.

A website would be nice, but I am prepared to go and buy a book if necessary.

Cheers.

They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

Thanks mate. Unfortunately I've already had a look at all of those to no avail. I'm beginning to think that the regimental histories have got the names all wrong.

But thanks to you I did find this cool pic, I only had a black and white version before:

These are the very chaps I'm following, my local territorial regiment. I hadn't spotted it before as I was using Google Images, and only the maps were coming up. So thanks for that.

Brilliant. Nice one, Prof. Your Google skills (or patience) certainly surpass mine.

I would have bet good money the solution would have come from Helen, though I would have had you in second place if it were an each-way bet. Good job I never went to the bookies.  :)  Thanks.

Now we have a map the Herefords are going to show those bloomin' Turks a thing or too. Mostly how to get lost in thick brush, but also how to get shot at and blown up without complaining.

Well, I've somewhat unexpectedly been bitten by a bug for "real" historical gaming, rather than my usual Pulpish sort. In addition to Rommel in 1914, I'm doing Tanga and Palestine soon, and I figured that I could use some of the same figures for a skirmish game featuring my local regiment from the 53rd (Welsh) Division at Suvla. I have a book detailing their exploits in both wars, and thought I'd do something with local historical interest.

A bit too straight-laced for Lead Adventure though, don't you think? I reckon my usual comic style and disregard for proper history isn't really appropriate. Anyway, we'll see.

I think if you want to do the historical gaming you should report on it anyway. Helen shares pictures of her Gallipoli game (which, if you haven't seen it, is epic in scope) and I've enjoyed them immensely.

One of the nice things about this page is that the people here enjoy good painting and good games regardless of the style. I don't think anyone will object on the grounds that you were Insufficiently Silly.

Absolutely you should share it. As much as I avoid real history because I don't have the time to do the proper research, I enjoy a good straight battle report. It's interesting to see what tactics people use and what the outcome is.

Yes, I have seen Helen's fantastic pictures from that convention game. In fact, I've been looking at them rather a lot lately. Rest assured, my game will be nothing like that, but something much more modest in scope.

I'm thinking of combining it with my sniper game idea. It will be me and young Sickly "Against the Game," I think. A scenario consisting of the Herefords' initial advance from Suvla, before it all became about how good you were with a shovel. As they seem to have been isolated and out of contact with both the British and ANZAC troops on their flanks, and the advance companies got out of touch with those behind, it might make an interesting skirmish scenario with them lost in the thick "jungle" as one officer called the terrain they found themselves in.

I'm thinking of it being about a couple of units having to cross the table in the face of numerous random events, such as sniper, MG and artillery fire, hidden enemy troops suddenly appearing, getting lost and confused in the brush, and the advance having to be completed on a timed schedule, before the clueless brass hats at the back order the men to withdraw for no apparent reason.

no at all!  A Lead Adventure don't need to be a imaginary/fantastic one :) Love to see someone playing something straight-laced. My Burma will be a similar project

Thanks guys for your vote of confidence. Sorry I wasn't around, but there are some lovely folk here who have been forthcoming with good info.

Hope your game turns out well.  :) I do love your little stories Poly especially East-Africa which is another passion of mine. My book collection reflects this.  :)
