Lots' of good suggestions here. If you want to go to the authentic era music, there's always Dave Bourne's Saloon Piano Cd's. More info on the man and his music: http://www.drewdaniels.com/saloonpiano.htm He plays authentic music using authentic instruments. So it's fine for background music for roleplaying etc. I got two Cd's worth, and their great. As you can read on the site, Dave Bourne appeared in Deadwood too!

Another good Cd is Ry Cooder's movie Soundtrack for The Long Riders. Great tunes, also very authentic sounding. And this time with singing too. Gotta love Cole Younger Polka!

Ahhh, memories of Hollywood, LA and San Fran back in 1980. I ate so many burritos and heard so much piped mariachi music, I spontaneously grew a Zapata moustache  lol lol

Soundtracks like those mentioned are great. The Long Riders one is a personal favorite.

There is a great band from Arizona (although the members hail from California and include a German I think) called Calexico that I like. They do everything from covers of traditional Mexican songs like "Cascabel" to modern electronica-like stuff like "Attack, el Roboto, Attack!". They have some live stuff up over on www.archive.org.

Robert Earle Keen is another contemporary guy I like. He's country/rock, but the albumn "Nowhere to here" has several songs that cover the career of a fictional gunfighter.

Then there are the dozens of tracks by Bob Wills and other cowboy swing artists crammed on my ipod.

For western games...
(and I am suprised no one said it yet...)
Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads and More Gunfighter Ballads
Also try...
The two Deadlands RPG soundtracks (Weird Wailins and Aces and Eights)

For other games, I have a lot of other playlists...

Me too, I'm a big Ry Cooder fan. The Paris Texas soundtrack would go pretty well too, and almost the Alamo Bay one (both 20thC plot films, but great stuff).

Oh, and for anything a bit Cajuny - the soundtrack from Southern Comfort  :-*
