2nd RCW Church Trooper
« on: May 02, 2010, 04:58:52 PM »
Some weeks ago I saw the new troops painted by Lt. Hazel ( here) for his fictional 2nd RCW. It didn't take me long to be intrigued by the concept and the small size of the forces required (I am slooooow, you know) to order some Assault Troops at Copplestone Castings. These guys are going to become my Neo-Tsarist/ Russian Orthodox/ Byzantine Empire Reestablishers. After a few tries, I decided to paint them in an Urban Camo pattern. That also took a few tries till I was satisfied. I am still pondering markings for these fellas. A friend suggested painting an Orthodox cross on the back of the helmet of the officer, in similar manner to the markings of WWII US helmets. I actually quite like the idea. The mech that fill follow these troops around will definitely carry more markings and maybe some slogans creating a bit more of a context.

Anyway... here he is:

He looks great! I really like the camo scheme.
The Orthadox cross thing sounds like a good idea too.

Nicely done.  The vivid green and red on the helmet and goggles make a nice contrast with the drab camo.

Like Steve F said, the vivid red and green set the figure nicely in a slightly more fantastic, sci-fi setting.

The cross on the back of the helmet sounds like a great idea: another thing that will immediately place the figure in another context, rather than just another camouflaged trooper.

Beautiful painting by the way :)

Really nicely painted. The orthodox cross sounds a good idea, and urban camo looks right on the model, which is nicely offset with the red and green as already said.

very neat  :-*
so only officers are to get a cross?

why not all of them and on the side of the helmet?

Thank you for the kind comments. I was hopping the glasses and red dot would create a pleasant contrast as I've used a very limited palette with most of the miniature. Slate Grey by Foundry was my best friend. :)

former user... because I am not sure how it will look. I simply chickened out.  :D Should it work well, I might redo the rest. For now the camo was my main issue.

I think former user might be onto something. Paint on a little red shield, with golden rim and a golden cross, to the side of the helmet.

Or indeed a simple, clean white cross to the front. "In hoc signo vincas", or just death-defying religious fanatism.

EDIT: Whipped up a mock-up of what I was thinking:

I think that a white cross on the side of the all the helmets would look good. Like Cheetor said it would give them more context too.

I gave it a try... sigh... What do you think?

I am not sure about this. It looks to thin... A shield would turn out too large I fear... Not sure it would look good.

Yeah I'd say you've nailed it, with the cross.
