Large scale action in Germany 1780. Picture heavy
« on: May 12, 2010, 11:17:29 PM »
I thought I would share with you some pictures of one of the best games I played last year. It is the Battle of Fulda, in Germany, and was fought between the armies of Hesse-Cassel, France and Wurtemburg. It forms part of a fictitious campaign set in the 1780s. I won't bother captioning each picture, I think they will speak for themselves.

Hope you enjoyed these.
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

Fantastic.  Very colorful game and I like the terrain too.  I'm also curious about which ruleset you were using.

:o

That’s simply fantastic. It really represent the idea I have of "classical wargaming" with lots of 25mm figures and a 18th Century theme.

Is that your very own gaming room?
What makes are the figures?
They are Seven Years War figures, aren’t they?
Are the flags hand-painted?

So many questions lol

... but just really lovely 8)

Awe inspiring - that is a lot of beautiful lead. :o

I rejoice when I get a single soldier painted - great effort!

What make are the buildings?

Ok I will try and answer some of the questions as best I can. The game was played at the home of my friend and wargaming legend John Ray. The figures are all designed and made by John, who has them cast privately and then painted. John is primarily an AWI enthusiast, and the basis for these forces came from his AWI French and Hessians. John decided he wanted to move them to Europe so that he could make large amounts of cavalry. His wargames room is one of those places where, when you visit you start conjuring up ways to burgle it, just joking John if you read this.

The buildings are all scratch built by a guy who in addition to being one of the best pen and ink artists I have ever known, was an architect/builder in real life. I cannot convey the exquisite detail that goes into these buildings, suffice to say they are awesome.

The rules we use are a home made very old schools set, which give a fast, fluid game capable of handling the huge numbers of troops involved.

Sadly, John does not make these figures available commercially, but I respect his decision in that. I will just tantalise you even further by saying watch this space over the next couple of years as something quite amazing is on its way. Nuff said.

That's what I call lace wars. Truly inspiring. The massed units are plain great; too bad those miniatures are not commercially available.
Btw, I've lived near the real town of Fulda for years, and I'm still returning once per year to visit one of the biggest 18th century reenactment shows in Germany, which takes place nearby. Nice find. ;)
