Afghanistan battle report ...

Helmand Province 2010 - Afghanistan action using 'Flying Lead'

The local Brit boys have been given the task of snatching a local Taliban leader while they are having a meeting in a compound just on the edge of the 'Green Zone'.

The scenario is the new 'Snatch scenario' from 'Hearts & Minds' (new Afghanistan supplement which will support the Battlegames Combat Stress appeal).

The game was played in 28mm on a 4x3 using Empress and Old Glory (Brooks) miniatures.

The Taliban Leader was in the building within the compound, guards were posted on the roof and all around the table, there were a number of IEDs placed out (each IED has 2 other dummy markers, they can be 'investigated' for 2 actions but sometimes time means they have to be either avoided or the risk of tripping them taken:

The Taliban won the initiative (the roll of which resulted in the drawing of a 'Joys of War' card ... it was later to save a RPG wielding soldier) ... this is a new addition to Flying Lead to add 'genre' flavour and Fog of War. A few of the RPG firers managed to set up a couple of overwatch areas and a few Taliban managed to move towards the approaching ISAF force. Even while there is no enemy on the table winning the initiative is still useful - obviously the Taliban got wind of the approaching force.

The British forces enter the table and avoid the possible IED areas and were thus channeled into the overwatch areas. The Taliban on overwatch had to do a quality check to resist firing as the first Brit soldier came within range of tripping the overwatch and fireed when there were two potential targets in the blast zone. It hit near target and blew down a couple of soldiers (but they were not injured, although one was 'shaken').

However the next soldier  managed to fire on the other RPG man and make them dive for cover - thus taking the other overwatch off.

The rest of the squad managed to advance before turning the activation over.
The Taliban turn saw their main fighter (the Hero) rushing out of the building to help to try and stop the advancing ISAF force.

The Taliban Leader figured it was time to cut the meeting short and escape in the car ... a group order saw him and the driver rush out to the car

The British squad advanced and managed to suppress the Taliban behind the outcrop.

The next Taliban activation saw the Leader try and get the car going but the character in the way failed to activate, the player had only risked trying for 2 actions but failing both turned the turn over to the Brits again.

However trying to finish off the 'shaken' Taliban failed miserably until the minimi gunner got close and personal

Another RPG flew out ... the impact point was moved due to the hit roll (the Brit player could move it enough for it not to have a devastating effect

The Brit squad then managed to take down a few Taliban

But then the Taliban 2ic managed to activate and caused the first ISAF 'man down'.

Finally the driver had a clear path

and made the most of it

The Taliban fighter managed to suppress the Minimi gunner ... and succeeded - it was a shaken result.

But the gunner used his 'hero' reroll to manage to negate the result:

This meant he was free to open up on the fleeing car, his shots making the driver swerve into the rocks ... however he must have slammed the brakes on as there was no further damage caused:

Meanwhile the Squad Leader managed to get over to check the man down ... who it was revealed just needed a good 'encouraging' talk to (against all the odds the Leader used his battlefield medic skill to great effect getting a 'ok for next activation result).

While one Private managed to spray the car and 'stun' the occupants (it would take them one action to recover next activation) an off board GPMG opened up on them ... only the support weapon gunner's Osprey armour saved him from an out of action result ... shaking him instead

It must have been the Taliban Leader's words but he managed to activate the car 'group' for 3 actions, one being used to recover from being stunned, one to reverse and the last to head for safety while the other fighter sprayed ineffectively out of the window.

Then it all went pear (or should that be gourd)  shaped for the Taliban, the minimi gunner managed to completely wreck the car two of the occupants being put out of action while the Leader managed to jump clear but in a shaken state ... a British soldier dashing to pin him (he didn't have enough actions to initiate combat but at least it would make it harder for the leader to recover and run off)

The British Officer had called up for the Warrior to come in as they had suffered two more men down in a vicious exchange of fire (it was later discovered that both were T3 or walking wounded)

The only hope for the Taliban was for their best fighter to activate and rush over to save their Leader - he rolled two fails so couldn't oblige,

He was taken out of the action by an aimed shot and that caused a Taliban morale check which even with most of them having a 'fanatic' rating saw a majority of those left scoot for the nearest table edge ... 68 minutes after we had started the game was effectively over ... the resulting VP rolls saw it go down as a decisive victory for the Brits ... the capture of the Leader helped to produce quite a few 'Heart and Mind' points which are vital for the mini campaign we are playing ... It had been a close run thing and a couple of pieces of bad luck managed to foil the escape in the end ... next time maybe!
