Fell Lords for the world of Conan
« on: May 28, 2010, 07:31:18 AM »
Alternative Armies have released 2 awesome Fell Lords to their fantasy line.

Should fit the world of Conan!  :)

They would make great Vanir or Aesir warriors.

There is some very soft sculpting on those but it suits them well and add to the old school look. They are re-releases?

They are re-releases - I had them about 20 years ago when they were out the first time.

Yup, Gavin is re-releasing the whole fantasy range.
It's a great range with all sorts of wonderful minis coming out. Check out the gnolls too.
I believe some of these are Gary Morley sculpts, not sure though.

The lord on foot would work well as a chaos warrior for heroquest, how do they scale up though?

Can't say I know, I'm afraid.

I *should* be able to get Gavin to take a scale photograph. But that won't be until Monday and probably not up until the end of the week.

They look like refugees from a Molly Hatchett album cover. In other words: Awesome.
This is my boomstick!

Gavin is currently in Spain, so can't take the pictures.

I'll try and get them out of him when he gets back.

It's also pushed my sculpting back because I'm waiting for parts!  lol :)

Nice retro feel to the models.

The Nordheimer, Aesir and Vanir, do not wear plate.  There is no evidence in Howard that they wore anything heavier than what he termed mail.  There is no mention of plate armor in "The Frost Giant's Daughter", the only story in the Conan canon dealing exclusively with the Nordheimer.  This could be interpreted as most likely chain or it could include possibly include scale.  Plate armor would be reserved to the Hyborian nations, Aquilonia, Nemedia, Koth, Zingara perhaps Ophir and Argos.  It would be cost prohibitive and limit mobility greatly for a raiding force like one would see from the Nordheimer.  Plate armor is what nobles can afford, particularly the cavalry portion of an army, which would be the main portion of any of the Hyborian kingdom's armies.

There is no evidence in the Howard texts that the Vanir wore horned helmets, however in "Queen of the Black Coast" Conan is wearing a helm of Aesir make which is horned.  I do not have the story right in front of me, but I belive they are described as being bull's horns.

At any rate, I am hijacking the thread unintentionally, they are fine old models with a great nostalgic feel.
