Scratch Built Rock Army
« on: May 30, 2010, 09:02:19 PM »
Have just posted this in the workbench section but thought it would sit ok on the Fantasy boards as well.
Introducing my new scratch built army  :)

I made an Earth Elemental out of a foam block you are supposed to do Yoga with  ;D

Next to an otherworld skelie for scale (it's 10cm high!)
Then I really lost the plot and decided to make some troll sized rock warriors out of the afore mentioned foam.

Here he is with his 7 other mates

and back with the elemental

I did a write up of how I made the models on my website in case the whole made out of foam is confusing anyone  8)

Oh and just for luck here are some more rocks, if you have any questions just let me know.

Super cool. Really nice idea.

I had this strange experience - read the topic title in the bar at the left and I immediatly had an idea about what I expected to see... though I had never thought of the idea before. And they looked quite like I expected.   lol

Extraordinary. How stoned were you when you came up with the idea? ;)

What kind of foam is that, exactly - semi-soft, or rigid? I'd shudder to think how fragile it might be.

It's actually very dense but you can squeeze it between your fingers. Where as you might think it's too fragile, acrillic paint sticks to it and doesn't flake even if you bend the pieces. And because it's not solid it is hard to chip bits off. The Earth Elemental is 10cm tall and yet I can drop it from standing height with no ill effects  8)

here is a picture where I have cut off some pieces with a craft knife. You can see how dense it is by the lack of knife marks.

You do know that you should have cast these up, right? Do them in resin and bet people will want them ;)

I've enjoyed the article on how you made the Rock Monsters.  Thank you including it.

I think your use of material in inspiring, very well done.
