Figures for the War of the Roses?
« on: June 04, 2010, 08:02:33 AM »
After some years of boardgaming, I'm returning to tabletop. I have found some interesting rules, regarding  the War of the Roses. (It's "A Paper Crown" and it's sister-companion "A Coat of Steel" by The Perfect Captain)

I now looking for some nice figures in 28 mm to throw some paint upon. :-I
I would be very happy if I could get some recomendations about figures and models for this.

best regards
Johan

Joroas has given the one word answer.

The other one I would consider is Front Rank as I like Alec's sculpting style to paint.

I'm a Front Rank junkie, but in this case I would agree with the suggestion Of Perry. The plastic sets are cheap, but excellent quality.

How about Corvus Belli if they are still available?

Corvus belli are now part of the crusader miniatures range.

Foundry has some nice ones too.

There must be others, but as this period doesn't do much for me, I'm not very well informed.

Beware though, Perry and Front Rank really aren't compatible, so you'll have to pick one of them and go with it.

And the winner is.........

PERRY!  :D

Really, Perry.

I'm afraid I think the old Front Rank WOTR range looks pretty clunky alongside the Perry stuff.

The Perry figures not only look like real little people, they look like real soldiers - you can tell the figures have been designed by people who know the gear intimately from re-enactment and have captured the 1460-1485 period look perfectly in every little detail.

Most of the other WOTR ranges out there look like much more generic Medievals.

Have to agree, I always thought that Front Rank were the bees knees for WotR and was tempted many times, but Michaels stuff is is just superb and totally irresistable, plastic or not, don't know how I held out so long. Thanks for convincing me Cap'n.

The Foundry Late Medievals are the original Perry WOR range done for Games Workshop in the early 80s, still very nice  8)

Very small though - even against the Perrys. I have some and I don't know if they'd mix in  :(

The only thing I see as a problem with Perry's is the lack of cavalry, they only do a couple other than mounted command

however I expect that cavalry was not that prevalent in that time? although I must admit to being quite ignorant of the period, but I do like my cavalry you know  :D

Perrys are still producing the range, there is a recent thread here with their new men-at -arms and characters, also they are soon to release a new plastic box of mercenaries and crossbowmen.  There is another box of cavalry after that IIRC.
