Immortal Plastic hoplites
« on: June 13, 2010, 12:29:50 PM »
Hi all together,
at the moment, I am painting the lovely new Immortal plastic set, and here they are! A lot more to come, but I hope you quite like these! 8The shields are painted by myself, but based on the superb immortal transfers)

So far I've painted two Impetus sized units of these hoplites.  These are the first plastics I've painted since old Airfix days and it certainly requires a defter touch than painting metal figures.  I've also found a few problems.  First the swords - no matter how I place these they get in the way of the shields.  I've been putting heads and spears on the torsos and painting them separately from the shield before gluing them together and then lining before shading.  Finally I just junked the swords altogether.  As it is they looked too big esp the curved one, so no great loss and their fixing point is hidden behind the shield anyway.  You also have to be careful which head and arm you put on which torso (I think) as matching (1) long hair (head to torso) and (2) edge of body garment to arm - but maybe I'm misunderstanding the connections. The transfers too are tricky as they are flat and the shields are concave.  I've had wrinkle issues especially with the larger transfers like the gorgon's face. Lining too is tricky since the thicknesses between materials is much less on these than on most metal figures.  Most important though is to make sure the head and spear don't interfere with the placing of the shield.

But despite all this they have turned out very nice.  The spears especially, with their point at both ends and the variety of heads and helmets is excellent. I just wish I could find some cheap greek horse to go with them - and some peltasts.  I see that Renegade are selling their Punic Wars cavalry for about £1.06p each if you buy a regiment at a time (and buy a few regiments of foot as well) but I can't tell from their photos if any of these are useable as Greek horse.

Yes, they will release them soon, as I saw on Salute. I really do like the miniatures and it's really a box of plastic that is good for everybody, but you can see it on the pictures. Thanks for all the comments!

Btw: Renegade horses must be true giants, as the immortal greeks are smaller than Foundr ones!
