Vikingr greens
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:46:22 PM »
Hi
What do you think of these- they have sat in my garage for the last 17 years on a shelf in a box- At the time I got really busy at Nortel Networks and just forgot about them.

They are 54 mm with separate heads, arms and weapons and sculpted from the Osprey Elite. I just popped the arms and heads etc on with a bit of blu tack for the photos. Do you think its worth doing anything with them?

Thanks

Not my thing, but I think they are well worth casting.

Well it all sounds pretty good - they are not going to set the world on fire-so I think I will go ahead- even if I just get a few sets painted up for my own nostalgic pleasure and if Comsquare wants some thats a bonus- thanks for those comments.

If anyone else wishes to comment please do.

Contact Ian Kay at Irregular, I'm sure he'd pick them up.

Okey Doke- I will contact Irregular - Had a look at their site- actually the viking figure on there looked a bit similar.

See what they say. I do have alternatives but they do seem to be the sort of thing they do.

I have finally got round to casting these and have one set available for sale now but after that I will have to get them cast from Griffin - but they are quite fast these days.

OK, I'm going to be hyper critical- I hope that you take it in the way that it is meant- I could certainly not sculpt to your standard.

Overall I think they are worth casting up but with the following changes:

1/ The swords and the scabbards are too bulky for me and too long.

2/The 'Vikings' were more familiar with what is commonly known as the longbow (though they would have just referred to it as a bow) and the recurve on your bowman seems more akin to an Eastern composite type. (It is of course possible that with contact with the 'East' growing from the 8thC onwards that one or two may have picked up a composite bow along the way.)

Please do not be put off by my comments. I just thought it fair to add a couple of pointers that would improve them.

I'd love to see them cast up too.

Darrell.

Atheling- your probably right on all counts and thank you for your thoughts- I think the swords can be filed for personal preference as can the scabbards.

On the bow I must have taken that from a reference somewhere - if not the Osprey book I was basing them on - maybe from one of the old Ian Hath armies and enemies books - I like those books.
It's quite possible I used an eastern viking source for that and as you say it's not beyond the realms of possibilities for such a bow to find itself further afield.
