King Leōnidas
« on: July 29, 2010, 11:34:53 PM »
Sorry if the following post is a load of old dribble but I am sooooo tired it aint even funny..

Started this mini two days ago, my friend convinced me to paint it up for a local competition, I have to say this is my 3rd ever attempt at non metallic metal (a technique I really am not fond of personally) but I think I made a fair pass at it, all in all I am very happy with the model, when I get the time I will mount it on a really nice plinth or the like, but time does not allow for that at the moment.  Best thing from my point of view is, I have managed to go from in bits in packet to finished model in two evenings worth of work and to a fairly high standard.

Right now pictures of King Leōnidas

Thoughts?

Lovely paint on a really nasty figure :)
The shield is particularly effective.

I like the dark and gritty look of it.  Very nice painting.  Good luck on the competition.

Nice paintwork indeed. Where's the figure from? Is this a preview of some homosexual super hero range? Leonidas and his power of flight, Noel Coward and the Power of Clipped Delivery, Stephen Fry and the Power of Intimidating Wit.

I really like what you have achieved with him, I painted the other spartans from that range and have not attempted Leonidas at all yet.

a brilliant piece of work

Excellent  :)

Is the spearshaft wood or metal?  If wood, personally I would have gone for a darker grain.  If metal, a dark bronze rather than gold.  The painting on the figure is beautifully co-ordinated, but the spearshaft jars ever so slightly.  The colour is too close to the "gold" areas for me.  The great balance of the piece could have been enhanced even further if it was closer to the darker hue of the leather or shield handle.  (Hope you don't mind me saying?)

The NMM is spot on in my view.  If this is what you achieve when you're "not fond" of it, think how good it will be if you grow to like it.   :)

For a third attempt really nice. Like the base, skin and bright red cape. You have the skills to make this work.
Main thing I'd change is the color and contrast. It now somewhat has a "molen cheese" look. By increasing the contrast, you can get a more realistic metal look.

Wowsa loads of feedback

@ everyone

Thanks for the kind words

and then everyone who put forward specific questions

@ Carlos

haha no its from Tales of War range I beleive, not sure as I have chucked the packaging away now.

@ Orctrader

well it was done as one single peice of metal for two reasons, time I had to cut corners as last night was the only time to get it finished and I only found out about the comp on Tuesday night, secondly the idea of the king having a more ornate weapon was appealing, although I do agree, I will probably go back and give it a wooden shaft together with wood grain as per my Ogre in the picture below, had I the time I would have done that in the first place.  Anyhow thanks for the kind words and pointers, all helps with improvement in the future

@ Malebolgia

Thanks again for the kind words and also the pointers it is always very easy to take a subjective view of your own models, the objective views of others helps make the picture clear.  Looking at the Sigmar chappy painted by Alexiz I see what you mean, sadly I am no where near her standard or ability, maybe one day but thats some way off.  But using her work as a reference point is a good start :D

Deeelightful ;D
I really like the ogre too, perhaps even more so. The snow works really well as a base texture against the figure. Top Marks :)
