Mountains and Hills

I have a plethora of styrofoam, need mountains, hills, rocky outcrops.

I did pretty good on just some low, sandy hills for Sudan.

  As for mountains and such, what is the concensus on the way to proceed?  ideas,  pictures, tutorials and suggestions from the masters here would surely be appreciated.

Are you doing Mountain as in Mont Blanc or as in high hill Trejhøje?

Smokey, I played in a pulp game at Historicon with some good mountain/volcano terrain I'd like to try to copy. Interior was a support skeleton of styrofoam, exterior surface was result of paper mache-like technique using strips of old t-shirts instead of paper. Painted and flocked, it looked pretty good and was pretty sturdy. I originally thought it was the plaster cloth the model rr community uses, but the t-shirt techique is a much cheaper alternative. This allows you to cut up junk packing foam or even make a cardboard frame and supplement it with balled up newspaper to achieve your rough shape. The model rr sites are full of tutorials for landscaping with plaster cloth and the support structure for these works with the technique.

For outcrops, I think the woodlands scenics plaster molds are the way to go.

Any of the model RR books on terrain building will definately get you started on the right track, as well as any number of tutorials to be found on the web. Foam is definately a good - light weight - base material. Just build it up in roughly the shape you are looking for then cover it with paper mache, plaster cloth or the t-shirt strips soaked in plaster. Once it has dried you can layer on more plaster - or whatever - to give the mtn. the final shape. As for outcroppings - you can make your own molds from rocks lying about and some latex mold making stuff that can be found at almost any craft store. Make sure to pick a rock that has a lot of good surface detail. I have one rock that I used to create 6 different molds. Just paint on three or four layers of latex - letting it dry between layers - then place a layer of gauze ( medical gauze tpe bandage) over it and paint on a couple more layers of latex. This makes a long lasting rock mold. Or you can use the Woodland Scenics molds - but they can get expensive if you want a lot of variation.
