I have played a few.

A very rough guide:

One person is the ref/gm  and has a map of the table - some just use hex sheets with symbols on it, and others take photos of an actual table that has been set up with scenery.

Players are given units and let the ref know where they are set up.

The set up map is sent to each player and orders are given, which is sent to the ref.

The ref either makes the dice rolls, or an online web dice roller is used.

The ref then lets the players know of the results for the turn and so on.

I am thinking of doing one for Strange Aeons to be played via the LAF forum, but that is a secret  :-X

I used to subscribe to a site called (IIRC, it was a few years back) hexwar. It had old boardgames online with rules and all. You set up a game with your opponent and then you logged in and took your turn (daily, hourly, or every few minutes, whatever you felt like).

There are free programs like suntzu that allow you to play a board game online in real time. Many fans have created "game boxes" containing all of the graphics (maps and counters) and code needed to play. You do not get the rules though, you are supposed to have bought a copy of the game in question. Some friends of mine have played this way and really enjoy it.

Sorry to 'high-jack' the thread somewhat, but...

I'd be really interested in a Strange Aeons email campaign Sheerluck. At the very least I'd be interested in hearing more about how you'd run the games!  :D
