My spaceport project so far!
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:28:45 AM »

Well I've been talking about the spaceport project I've been building all the ships and vehicles so I thought I would show a picture of what progress we have made so far on the buildings.

I say we because all the building other than the ore processing platform in the top left of the picture were constructed by my awsome wargameing wife.  While I've been focusing on the ships and vehicles she's been working hard constructing buildings and other details.

We're very happy with the project so far and I'll be posting more construction details in this thread.

I must say, you are a lucky fellow to have your wife help. Although my wife does not help me do anything with me and my miniatures, she has been helping me design and decorate my gaming room...hopefully we will be done within the following week as it has taken us most of the summer to do.

The buildings, vehicles, etc. all look great...keep us posted as I am curious to see the results. My son told me tonight that he has the entire construction set which includes the crane and dump truck which he was going to give away. After seeing your picture, he has decided to keep it for us to use for our Sci Fi Alien vs. Predators vs. Space Marines. Thanks for the photo.

Hope to see lots more. Tell your wife she is awesome from all of us!!
Regards,

Looking really good! Fantastic idea also. The amount of different toy space ships out there considered. This will be stunning.

I have to say that I would never allow my wife or children within 30 paces of my hobby though. Where would I go to ease my mind then!?!  lol

Looking good!  :)

I'm always jealous of people who have room to build and store stuff like this, never mind the uber-awesomeness of your wife.

That looks great. I love the buildings. What kind of ground surface are you going to be doing? Concrete, dirt or a mix?

Thanks guys.  Hopefully I'll be able to add another update tonight.  I need to get on this because I'm starting my last couple semesters at school tomorrow and I'll be bogged down with class work before I know it.

@Luckyjoe: the setting I'm building these for is a minimally teraformed moon so pretty much dirt and rock.  Although one of the reasons we have raised on the buildings on platforms is so we can use them on any kind of terrain.

@MrHarold:  the spaceships are from a number of sources.  The black and Yellow one in the front is a converted "Cobra Gunship" from the G.I. Joe toy line that isn't quite finished.  The green and red one is a converted "Skysweeper" Jet also from the G.I. Joe toy line.  The one in the hanger is a from the CORPS toy line which is like a knock off G.I. Joe line of toys.  The grey one in the very back if from a playset I picked up at Dollar General by a company called Boley.  None of them cost more than $25.00 and the little brown one peaking out of the garrage I can get a Wal-mart for less than $7.00.  They are mostly designed for 3" action figure lines and I convert most of them by adding a strip of plastic to the canopy to make it appear smaller.  I also sometimes have to add landing gear and hatches.  Most of these are covered in the workbench section of my blog. http://ironworkersminiatures.blogspot.com/

Define too much.  I live in cow country after all. :)  We've been collecting trays for about a year which is about when I started planning this project.

Here is the nearly complete ore processing plant.  I've got a couple more details to add and then paint.  I can't wait to get a basecote on it because these kind of scratch builds always look better primed.

I'm planning on adding detail shots of the one finished building tonight or tomorrow.  Thanks for the comments.

That looks cool! Excellent of those razor handles. Reuse, recycle... an ore processing plant that's good for the planet.  :)

What are the 2 silver boxes on the platform on the left? They look like they'd make great pre-fab houses for 15mm sci-fi.
