Any ideas how I'd go about scratcbuilding a load of these:

I'm thinking along the lines of balsa wood base with postcard sides or perhaps the ingenious use of coffee stirrers? I'd build them to hold about ten figures perhaps with one big chief version as well?

Obviously not for slavers though.

I'm going to try to transport a Generic Tribal Village for In the Heart of Africa!

I'm not into that kind of scratch-building malarky. I got some pretty much like that from TMTerrain. The chap there was very helpful, as I needed them for a tight deadline and so he painted them for me as well (though if time hadn't been tight I would have painted them myself) and really got me out of a jam.

Here's one crossing my computer desk:

I know that isn't what you asked, but I always think that if someone already makes it then why scratch-build? I'm lazy like that and it's probably letting the Lead Adventure side down a tad, but I feel I owe the TMTerrain fellow one for helping me out of a tight spot.

That is very nice indeed  :D

I'm on a tight budget at the moment due to the arrival of my third (and most definately FINAL) offspring yesterday so was thinking of scratchbuilding to save a bit of cash for nappies, calpol etc.

If (and it's a big IF) I can hoodwink the wife into letting me spend my pocket money on some of these, then I'll definately take the manufactured option. In the meantime I'll see if I can bash something together.

Thanks for the tip though.

In case you can't find them (I couldn't for ages), they are under the JJD Buildings section.

Website says they are a fiver each. I don't remember the unpainted price being as high as that when I bought them. Oh well. Perhaps I was so keen to get them in time I didn't care about the price. That sounds like me.

I guess if you want lots and are on a tight budget then they might not be for you (I didn't realise that, sorry). Not sure what to say on the whole scratch-building idea, I'm pretty rubbish at that kind of thing. The only thing I've ever scratch-built was the giant Kong gate. At least that turned out well, though.

Those Frontline canoes look interesting (and cheaper!). Has anyone got any Frontline DA stuff and if so what's it like? I'm interested in their village set so might send off for one if it's worth getting.

If you are looking for a cheap way to get lots of canoes, I'd suggest trying what one of my friends did.  He got some clay and molded a lot of canoes and baked them in his oven.  They work great and are sized so that his based figures fit perfectly in them.  He used the same technique for WW2 rafts.  The results look as good as anything that I've seen for sale, they are less expensive per canoe or raft, and they provide the pleasure of modeling.

Neat idea :)

I was thinking of carving a master then getting it vacformed in 1mm plastic by the guys in the Technology department at my school. I hadn't thought of making them in clay! Cool :D
