C.S.S. Caudell
« on: 20 August 2010, 03:53:21 AM »
This is the C.S.S. Caudell, an "Aeronef" of the unvanquished Confederacy.

From the top of the torpedo spar to the propeller, she's 16" long.  She's constructed from foamcore, styrene, and craft sticks, plus whatever else I had laying around.

I learned several things when painting the flag on the tail:
1) what most people think of as "The Confederate Flag" was actually a naval jack.
2) it's far too emotionally charged an issue for me to put that flag on a model I'm making when I live in the South.  Like, I've stood where the Citadel cadets shelled Fort Sumpter.
3.  The seven stars on a blue field was another common naval Jack that doesn't have quite the emotional/political tension associated with it.

You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

I like it and your choice of ensign.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Nice.  I like those bits of detail on the undercarriage-y thing.

Lovely! The brass and battleship grey go very well together. I particularly like the look of the large bow gun. Any chance of some close-ups of it and a quick tutorial on how you made it?

good job

i thought a 'flag' was only referred to as a jack when it was flown from the jack mast of a ship?

That turned out great - immediately recognizable as an ironclad with an ACW feel, and good call on the flag - it's both historical and unknown enough to work for a variety of fictional(ised) factions (actually, it could work for that alternate history concept where Napoleon won the wars, and Europe became a "European Union" over the course of the 19th century...).

This is quite possible.  I'm making baby steps here.

Recently perusing Warflag, I came across this page - http://warflag.com/flags/acw/csaclassic.shtml - of Confederate Flags, I don't know if you've seen it already. While there is the classic 'roof of the General Lee' flag, there were also a bunch of others, many incorporating the St Andrew's Cross. Perhaps one of these would be an option? Perhaps flying from a jack-staff... is it still a jack-staff on a flying boat? Who knows...
