2nd Build Something Contest
« on: August 23, 2010, 08:43:56 AM »
Presenting the second ‘Build Something’ Contest.

The subject for this first contest will be: CD

This time entries should not have their inspiration from a theme but rather you should come up with innovative ways of using your Best of Michael Bolton collection for wargaming.

There are only two restrictions to the competition this time:
1) the base must be a standard format 120mm diameter CD. It may not be larger but you may break it up or nibble it at the edges if you like.
2) the cd base should represent what is traditionally considered a piece of scenery for a wargaming board. It should not be a piece which you would move about on the board.

With his theme I think we'll keep the contest sufficiently open for all periods. I have deliberately steered away from mastodon builds. We all enjoy the sight of ambitious table top constructs, creaking under their own weight. I am however sure we all at some point have felt how our universe's meanness with time and space have occasionally prevents us from such projects. My hope this time is to make the most of a limited base thus coming up with something storage and transport friendly.

The following is the same as from last year:

Members can post WIP photos if they like. The advantage of WIPs means they can be used for future reference and would allow people to see how the item was constructed.  Each entrant should start a WIP thread for their own submission (WIPS only please, no completed items until after the contest has ended).  Posting such a thread is however NOT compulsory.

The idea is for scratch-building to form the major part of an entry.  If kits, pre-made resin/metal/plastic/etc parts are used they should ideally form only a minor contribution.

I do not wish to make the contest too restrictive for those taking part (or myself running it), so would suggest a modicum of common sense prevails.  Voters will (hopefully) decide whether the amount of scratch-building is sufficient.  The posting of a WIP thread for an entry is likely to aid voters choice.

All construction & painting should take place during the contest, no previously built/started items please.  The idea of the contest is to give you an incentive to build something you have just not got around to doing previously.

For final entries you can submit up to 3 photos:
-A single photo of the finished item (Minimum entry requirement)
-Another that can be a single or composite photo (of multiple smaller photos) of the finished item.
-One photo of the unpainted entry.
The photos may include a few miniatures/vehicle to indicate size/use/practicality of the item only.
The maximum size of each photo is limited to 800x800 pixels.

The closing date for entries is 2359 hrs GMT on 29 October.  They should be submitted to: buildsomething2@tsome.com

Initial voting commences  1 November and closes 7 November:

I will randomly group entries into several polls.  The winner of each initial poll will go through to a final vote.

'Grand Final' voting commences 8 November with the final result on 14 November.
(NB. If I receive only a small number of entries, just a single round of voting will take place).

Let the building commence. Good luck!

[If you have any questions please post in this thread or PM me]

that's great, I'm so proud to have started the topic about this new contest... :)

the maximum size should be 120mm, but is it necessary to use the CD as base? no plasticard with the same shape? :)

I'd like you to give me a good motive why. You don't have to post it, you can send me a PM if you want to keep it hushhush.

You don't need to use, although I see no better use for it, a Michael Bolton CD.

How can I get a Michael Bolton CD? I'd be too embarrassed to buy one in person, and I can't use the Internet as they would want my name and address to deliver it. Then that information (my details and request for Micheal Bolton) would be on someone's database forever.

Could I use a Lady Gaga CD instead?

No Lady Gaga CDs. David Hasslehof CDs will be accepted by our German participants (they love him there, you know...)

i hate cutting cds, the plastic they're made from is too hard to cut properly with nice shapes.

Styrene sheets (Aka plasticard) are much more easy to shape, and i've lots! :)

If I motivate with a "CD's are perfectly round and it looks like shit when a terrain piece is on a perfectly round base", would that give me pass to better bases?

Obviously it's down to hammers, but given that he said in the original post that the CD shape could be altered, I'd say you could use something else as long it was no bigger in any direction or surface area than a CD.
So many projects..... so little time.......

I assumed that, but just wanted to make sure :)
Besides, I adore Michael Bolton, so I only had some crappy Kiss records to molest.

I know you by now, Silversixx. Getting you to accept something is always accompanied by the sound of a rusty nail pulled from a plank of oak.  >:D

Dewie is right, I am going to be an asshole about this and insist on a CD. I am curious to see how you get around the problems using a CD poses and looks to its advantages.

I do accept the reasons for using a CD :)
But I still won't do it to my priceless Michael Bolton collection (His collection of inspiring tracks as Lady In Red and Once, Twice, Three times a Lady is probably the best record ever done!).

...and I assume you won't dig into your collection of Streaplers?

Sorry, people I'll stop now, but they are provoking me!  ;)

I have a lot of work around, but still i would be happy to work for this contest, because i can use the stuff i've done for my projects.
But if i've to work on a cd base (i mean, a perfectly round one), i'm not shure i can give him the right time it needs... :-\

You can alter the shape of the CD, it just has to be based on one, so there is no need for it to be perfectly round.
