I'd suggest not using any PVC or similar soft-ish plastics, unless you have a good covering substance - cardboard tubes topped with acrylic plastic domes, which you can often get from craft stores, work nicely, although it may be a bit difficult to find matching sizes.
I think I shall ad PVC undercoat (it exists apparently) to my DIY shopping list.

Pssst, linked to a discusion of that one in the first post but taking in to account shipping its a lot to pay for a single boiler and some piping.
