What is this artillery officer holding?

I see it's painted silver. It looks like a giant machete? Yes, I need a lesson in colonial artillery procedure.  ;)

Is it not supposed to be wooden. Don't know its prooper name but its like a pinch bar for moving the gun about. Maybe not an officer?

Looks like a Horse Artillery Gunner with a trail spike to me.

The figure is a Mutineer Miniatures Bengal Horse artillery gunner, not a BHA or RHA officer, and what he is holding is indeed a trail spike - i.e a rod inserted into the rear of the gun's trail to be used as an aiming lever.

Hey guys--much appreciated. I take it that it would be correct to paint it in a wood color?

Paint the same colour as the wood on you gun carriage.
