To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
With Cat-Like Tread
Upon our prey we steal...

Quote from: "Ironworker"

Redneck is a derogatory term and would likely cause hard feelings or worse .

"We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we lough too loud
We're too dumb to make it in northrern town
And we're keepin' the niggers down

We're Rednecks, We're Rednecks
And we don't know our ass from a hole in the ground
We're Rednecks, We're Rednecks
And we're keepin' the niggers down"

Randy Newman is a great songwriter, and strangely, it seems Southmen are particulary proud of this song...

I wouldn't know I've never heard that song.  It's clearly satire though.

Fry and Laurie provide a perhaps more tasteful satire song:

I have a feeling of Deja Vu, so maybe I've posted this before already. And sorry to anyone who doesn't like Youtube links.
"When to keep awake against the camel's swaying or the junk's rocking, you start summoning up your memories one by one, your wolf will have become another wolf, your sister a different sister, your battle other battles, on your return from Euphemia, the city where memory is traded." - Italo Calvino

I thougt anyone knows Randy Newman in the USA : he was a   real Star back in the 70's. But the new generations seem to have forgotten him

Anyway, the youngest kids will sing his songs cause he wrote the score for all the last Pixar movies

Yes, he's mostly known these days for the theme from Toy Story.

I loved Fry and Laurie. We should kidnap Hugh Laurie from that damn doctor show he's in, drag him back over here, and force him to work with Stephen Fry again.

Randy Newman also wrote the theme song used in the third and subsequent seasons of "Monk."

Who makes wonky singer/songwriters in 28mm? Or a zombie Randy Newman?

At work, we have two VPs for our division--one's first name is Randy. The other's last name is Newman. That was the part I was most nervous about in the interview.

Also a “Redneck” is more someone from a very rural area with a very rural and somewhat backwards worldview......

California stayed in the Union, as far as I'm aware.

We have Hillbillies here in the Welsh Marches, just like in the US. Ours are scary, like the ones in "Deliverance." More scary, perhaps.

I said I've never heard the song and that's likely because a song like that would not likely get much air time in any part of the U.S. because of it's content is likely to piss off such a large number of people.  It certainly seems to be sarcastic or satirical but I know a lot of folks who would not find it funny.
The theme song to Monk is very funny but I find the lyrics you posted distasteful because they seem to we written to piss folks off.

Not exactly :

Quote from: "Wikipedia"
a song that seems to criticize both southern racism and the complacent bigotry of American northeasterners who stereotype all southerners as racist.

Very minor and esoteric point: "Hillbilly" was originally used for the poor white farmers of the Appalachian Mountains. During the Civil War, the mountain counties of Virginia seceded from Virginia and became the Union state of West Virginia. Just as your average Confederate soldier was "Johnny Reb," your average Union soldier was "Billy Yank." So a "hillbilly" was a poor guy from the mountains who was a Union sympathizer. Up until that point, I think the derogatory term for the poor white farmers in general was "cracker."

So! All hillbillies are crackers, not all crackers are hillbillies, and you let rednecks describe themselves as rednecks and don't offer to do it for them.

California during the Civil War was under the governorship of John Fremont, a man who was probably more dangerous to the Union side than he was to the Confederacy. In US military history we have any number of appallingly incompetent generals who manage to do a great deal of harm. Fremont is always in the Top Ten Worst, if not the Top Five.
