List of 28mm scale pirate ships
« on: December 03, 2010, 09:47:23 PM »
This question comes up from time to time, so I thought perhaps an inaugral Swashbuckling 'Where to get' sticky was in order...  :)

Please add information about available 25mm/28mm scale ship models for wargamers, for the pirate era.

It's fine to add currently OOP models, by the way - these may come up on eBay and elsewhere from time to time. But please note whether they are currently in production or not, as far as you can tell.

If you have pictures of specific models, please add them, along with details of manufacturer, and ordering details / web links (if any).

Can we please concentrate on actual, purpose made 28mm-scale model vessels to start with?
I know many people have scratchbuilt their own, or acquired / ingeniously adapted ships from other sources like pound shops, dollar stores, McDonalds happy meal giveaways and Christmas crackers! Ditto Playmobil, Megabloks, Lego and so on. I know these brands have pirate-themed toys that can be adapted - but to repeat, this sticky is first and foremost to pull together a comprehensive list of actual purpose-designed model pirate era ships for gamers.

I'm going to kick off with:

Village Green, now manufactured by Stronghold Miniatures - although this company is currently in shutdown owing to family issues ::)

Three very nice ships, solid resin, crisp detailing, and with white metal accessories, lengths of dowel representing masts.

SHIP 1 Two masted Schooner / Brigantine £33.50
SHIP 2 Three masted square rigger / trading vessel £45.00
SHIP 3 2-deck 24-gun three masted vessel £60.00

I have the brigantine and the three master – both very nice and substantial models. I will take some pictures and add to this thread at some point soon…

Secondly, Dixon Miniatures.

Again, three very nice resin ships with well cast white metal accessories, not currently in their catalogue, but I believe you can still pick up two of them.

SHIP 1 Sloop
SHIP 2 Merchantman
SHIP 3 Man O’War

The Man O’War was a beautiful model and a beast of ship, but unfortunately, last I heard, the mould was shot, so they probably won’t be making any more. Wish I'd got one when they were still turning them out...

Dixon were certainly planning to keep producing the sloop and the merchantman though. Again, I have both these very nice models, and will post pics in due course - although I confess I haven’t yet made up and painted the sloop (and I’ve had it almost 10 years!)

Right – over to you…
Add away!

Scale Creep Miniatures has recently acquired the Flagship Games resin pirate ships.  I have not dealt with SCM, but I have a couple of the FG ships - nice, practical models.

I second the recommendation of Games of War ships, by the way.

Well done Cianty - you've saved us all a lot of work  ;)

That said, if anyone would like to add more pictures to this thread, it would be good to get a comprehensive catalogue  :)

I think it would be great to have links to threads (be it here or on blogs or whatever) of people showing off their purchased versions so people get a better idea of what the models are like aside from the photos provided by the manufacturers. I still try to keep the thread up-to-date and include relevant links whenever I find them.

Hey Senor! You wanna pictures? I give you pictures..

The Dixon Miniatures Sloop, although she is not painted up as a Pirate ship, here she sails as a Schooner, "The Demeter".
She's had some additions and modifications, like the rat lines, bell, wheel etc and the gun ports closed up.

There are more pics here:

Its a shame these are so hard to get hold of now as I think they were some of the nicest ships around. :(

Nice boats and good prices (UK)
They have branched out more into 1930's period boats as well.
