[Gallery] Hwæt! - Beowulf & Grendel
« on: December 04, 2010, 11:31:29 AM »
Almost traditionally a friend and I are staging a private "year's end gaming event". On this occasion we always come up with something new - may it be a bunch of recently painted figures or a whole campaign to be played. This year I went back to one of my all-time favorites, the Dark Age sagas. Having played a Nibelungen-campaign, I chose "Beowulf & Grendel" as a theme. Fortunately, I had all the necessary figures - apart from Grendel - at hand. I'm still wondering, why on earth I hadn't painted them (a series labelled as "Tanatus Miniatures") before. They are a real joy, both in sculpting and casting - maybe some of the best miniatures, I've ever painted in 28mm. :smt007

Beowulf (centre) and his thegns

Heavily armoured followers

Heroic skirmishers

Game-specific markers

And, of course, last but not least: Grendel

I dare to say that all participants had great fun with the game. On final dice rolling we achieved at least a gripping - if not epic - story as 'dramatic value' of our little campaign. We'll see what comes up, since we've only played the first part of the Beowulf saga...

For additional views and details, please check out the according entry on my blog. Visitors are very welcome!  :smt001

Very nicely painted. It's always nice to see some these fantasy/historical games.

Excellent paint jobs on great miniatures. Not seen these before, so thanks for bringing them to my attention.

Astonishing finish on those models :)

This is such a bad thread as I'm being pulled towards Dark Age-gaming more and more...

Many thanks, chaps, for your encouragement. To those longing for in-game photos (and I know there are some round here): Let me assure you that the actual table looked pretty boring. I hadn't the time to do a proper mead hall interior. So I transferred the opening scenario to the periphery of the surrounding village, which used fairly the same terrain pieces like the two following marshes/woodland settings.

And that's what it's meant to do actually. Glad to be of service. :D

Fantastic work.  I do like those Eastland Dark Age types and seeing them painted so well has only intensified my liking!  Excellent choice for the Grendel model, too; Those Otherworld Trolls certainly have that traditional 'Norse-Germanic' look about 'em.   I envy your gaming compadres!

Those are fantastic - the markers (and I hope they outings other than just being used for that purpose) are wonderful.

Lovely. I particularly like the realistic painting on the wolf (any fur I paint lacks that kind of variety), and the good use of birch-seed cases for fallen leaves  :D

Lovely miniatures, Beowulf has been an interest of mine for a long time, still not got round to reading it and or watching the film. I do like your paintwork and those game markers are fabulous, Kudo's to you I love you models!
