Perry Wars of The Roses reinforcements
« on: December 04, 2010, 11:42:30 AM »
I’m now well into my second box of Perry Wars of The Roses plastics, and also wanted to make a start on some of the metal foot packs I picked up at Warfare a couple of weeks ago.

Specifically I wanted to complete a few more of these before the new Mercenaries box lands – hopefully next week! (Because I know what I’ll be doing for several weeks once I have the new set in my hands!)

So - a few more reinforcements painted up in the liveries of the various retinues I have built up so far…

A couple more longbowmen for the retinue of Outwood…

A man-at-arms, a billman and a longbowman for the retinue of Crowhurst…

A longbowman and man-at-arms for the retinue of Staffhurst… (Thought I’d try ‘blued’ plate on the man-at-arms for a change… I quite like it. What do you think?)

A pair of men-at-arms for the retinue of Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey.

The standing man-at-arms is a metal figure and required a bit of surgery, since the bottom of his poleaxe is cast with a bend in it and moulded in that shape against the figure’s leg - an uncharacteristically rushed / sloppy bit of sculpting I’m afraid.
Anyway, I cut it away and replaced it with the plastic haft cut off a spare from the plastics box…

And finally, in eager anticipation of my plastic Mercenaries box, I wanted to experiment with some mercenary colour schemes. So, this chap - English as they come with his bill – is my first prototype mercenary. I think he looks quite continental with the five o clock shadow. I like this colour combo, black and yellow with a red band - so my first mercenary company will get this livery… I think I’m going to make them Flemings, because let’s face it, everybody does Burgundians, and so I’m going for something different!

Talk about save the best til last!

I thought the first pic was stunning, then - seeming impossibly - they got better and better.

The blued  plate really works but the beard on that mercenary ....  :o

Fantastic!  :-*

The men-at-arms of Howard are particularly good, but I really like the blued effect as well.

Be better than getting the ECW bug I suppose lol

Well I've lead an evil life, so they say, but I'll outrun the Devil on judgement day.

Just lovely. The mercenary's livery works really well.  :-*

Looks like I may have to add some more to the local retinue after all - can't let you southerners win on numbers!

Wow, more fantastic assemble / surgery / and brushwork, captain! I agree with SI, they are all great, but the merc is the best of the lot.

Those are incredibly good, specially the steel parts. How are mercenary schemes different from any other livery?

This is very impressive.

And the "blue-ed" armour shows very well.

But, er... have you references about the red band on the billman's livery ? Heraldic bands in the Middle ages were very broad, broader than this one I think.

Just asking - I do not even dream to paint my own minis as well as you do.

Stunning work there, Captain. Every time I see something you post up I have the urge to get off my bum and do some painting... after all the work I should have done, which I didn't because I was on LAF.

'Tis a vicious cycle.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what you do with the mercenaries.

Almost makes me want to do some WOTR as well... if only there was someone else who would join me in a game... *cough*Furt*cough*  lol

Thanks everybody, for such generous praise.  :)

No Patrice. No references. I just paint what I think looks good  :)
The red band is supposed to be more a 'mercenary mark' rather than a true heraldic device.

Looks like I may have to add some more to the local retinue after all - can't let you southerners win on numbers!

Yeah! Come on JB - you know you want to  :D
