Caesar vs Germans using Command and Colors
« on: December 17, 2010, 01:56:44 PM »
I played a solo game of Command and Colors, using 28mm figures. Because my board has no hexes, I modified the rules as follows. Movement is simple, heavy infantry 4", middle 5", light 6", med cav 10", generals 12".
When a unit retreats or evades they add one inch to their movement. Shooting is slings/bow 6", javalins 4".
Each sector had a number of commands in it. Roman deployment included 2x LI in each sector, 2x HI in each flank, and 4x HI with Caesar in the middle. Also on the right flank was 1x unit of German MC

The Germans had 3x units of MI/WI in each sector, and 2x LI in each sector.

Now in Command and Colors, victory is gained by destroying entire units, a unit consisting of 4 blocks, etc…. In my version victory is obtained by removing 30 figures from your opponents army. That simple. Instead of loosing entire units, you wittle your opponent away piece by piece.

Very interesting!  I wonder how much of a difference the change in the victory conditions - from units to figures - makes in gameplay?

The break point of the army is a third of it's total pieces. It could all come from one side of the table, or an accumulation of wittled units across the table.

Beautiful setup there! I love C&C and have wanted to use minis for it. Your conversion is so simple it is brilliant! Do you use four figures per block?

Oh man! That's cool! Always wanted to play this but you just need so many Germans that I could never paint them all.

No, unit composition is pretty loose.....LI consist of 4 figures a unit, WI consist of either 10 or 20 figures per unit, HI(Romans) are 12 each per unit. Mounted are 6-8 per unit. Remember though, your army breaks not on number of units lost, but on number of figures within all the units cumulative.

Thanks. Yeah, that figures-versus-total-units-lost thing sounds like a major improvement. I've seen people doing pretty gamey things to exploit the rules as written.

That looks like a great game. Your minis are superb! Who is the manufacturer of the Romans?

Very cool RedZed. Would do the same but the thought of rebasing over 200 mini's is too daunting.

Cool report! BEautiful terrain and overall atmosphere.
One question: as you based your models on single round base, for what other ruleset did you do it?
Or better: is there an ancient ruleset with loose models as yours?

The figures were originally based for Pig Wars. I ran a Teutoburg Forest game a couple years back. 'Three Cohorts lost in the woods, trying to make it to safety, etc, etc.... Germans popping up all around, etc, etc..... The game was loads of fun.
