Another shot of the shoggy from the rear:

Plus drilled and pinned the tentacles, shoggy lost an eye for the larger tentacle, but I'm sure it won't miss it! ;)

Will paint those later today.

This is the way to go. Still, the outer sleeve uses a huge amount of resin, so it may be a good idea to use some "filler" in its borders to save on costs. Even so, since we are talking about the casting of a very big shoggoth, the mould is going to be big nonetheless, so it would require the use of a special resin suitable for larger pieces. When sculpting, it is important to bear in mind the limitations on the possible shape, too, to allow for this type of casting.
But the way to go.

If you going to make it, it needs to made out of hardfoam, similar to what they use to make scenery  pieces, this stuff will also cut the weight down.

It's a simplified drawing. For something like this, I actually feel one should use a shell mold for the outer sleeve, rather than a block mold. Rubber ain't cheap, so I'm actually a proponent of using shell molds whenever possible. I only really like block molds for wee fiddly parts.

Hastily modified diagram:

The mother mold can be made from anything that's strong and rigid enough, and can be a shell instead of the block shown. As long as it's enough to keep the rubber in place. I've even seen people use stuff like epoxy putty and Friendly Plastic for small molds. Plaster w/ cloth embedded in it (plaster bandage, burlap soaked in hydrocal, etc.) is the most common I've seen, followed by polyester auto body filler.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Rather than detract from Iain's current cthulhu sculpt, why not move the QA hollow mould stuff to the workbench? Highly useful and get a bigger audience that way?

Yeah it won't have problems seeing with out that that one! Great stuff btw can imaging those Deep Ones herding the Shoggoth out of the sea under a gibbous moon.  ;D

I see the benefits of a shell mould for something as large as this would be, and the plug seems to be the way to go. Could be something I'd try on a small scale before attemping something larger.

Here's a pic of mine, painted as a Pripyat Mutant Monster:

More pics here, if you're interested: Radiant Prospekts Thread

A wonderful, wonderful piece. I'm currently trying to pace myself, but I'm having this idea of an army of Shoggoths... ten or so should suffice...

@Commander....Great effect on those eyes! (or whatever they are)  The green really does give me the sensation of pulsating.

@Westfalia...I love it! The differeing color scheme gives it a whole new feel.  Bizarre and creepy!

Sorry about that... was bad planning on my part. However I just got a box full of metal tentacles from the caster so Shoggoth will be back in stock today. Currently working on a re-mould of Son of Yog-Sothoth... that'll take a little longer.

Yeah some gloss will really set the model off. I found vallejo gloss worked best. Did this first but then did a second coat in humbrol enamel gloss for strenght, but that was too glossy. Ended up re-doing with the vallejo again. :)
