Folks,
Just got a note from Guy Bowers (Siege & Conquest author for WAB) that he ran a Playtest/Demo of LotHS while at Gamesday over this weekend. Here is his note:
"We had a slight problem with the table, we were supposed to be in the main hall buit they failed to put a table out for us. Rob managed to sort us out with another table next to a samurai siege game. I had asked for a 12ftx6ft, so we could run two games and get two lots of playtesting done at a time but we were stuck with a 6ftx6ft area. So we opted for a game using all the ships we had (five in total) and let the players control a ship each.
We had:
Argonaut (Large Ship with English crew)
Marie Anne (Medium ship with French crew)
Cadiz (Medium ship with Spanish crew)
Orient (Small Ship with Chinese Pirates)
Mars (Small Ship with Pirate Crew)
Scenario wise, we first had two 'fleets' fight it out. We were a bit lax on the boarding rules and it fought out to a bloody conclusion over 1½ hours. The next games were again several ships and a 'find the treasure' on the long island in the middle. We played three of those games (in about an hour each).
Verdict:
The players picked up the rules from scratch very well. Even the few naval 'experts' we had were happy with the simplicity of the rules. The overall reaction from players was it was great fun and naturally quite a few wanted to know where they could buy it. :-)
It wasn't a good playtest of the rules as it was a bit of a free for all, but it proved the rules are fun and easy to pick up (we weren't needed after a few turns). It would have been better in the main hall but I'll have opportunity to do some more playtesting this weekend. I'm going to a friend's in Swindon, Warren Gleeson of the SAD Wargamers. We'll try it out there.
Cheers,
Guy
PS: Rob had a draft of the artwork with layout and it looked very good."
So it looks like folks liked the game. Guy will post up more of a formal report on the LotHS group later along with some pics.
