Terrain boards, part 2
« on: February 20, 2011, 11:53:56 PM »
Some of you may remember the coastal terrain set I was working on last spring: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=19896.0 .  I have ventured further inland and added some acreage. First I filled in some blanks from the original plan and then focused on some river boards.

Overview of the new pieces, alongside a few of the originals.

This little pink precipice will someday be the site of my old west gold mine.  I had originally thought of making it the upper reaches of some sort of African waterfall, but since I have yet to actually paint any figures for that genre, I figured I'd go with something which is more established in my collection.

Here is a partial step-by-step of the river panels.  I have omitted the usual rout, carve, sand, gesso, amd grit phases, and started with the base earth painting.  In most cases I have started to mix a bit of masonry or wood putty pigment powder into the paint while it is wet on the board.  This is how I achieved the mottled look.

Here they are after a little more dry brushing and the addition of my flock mixture.

And lastly, as they are now; one pour of Woodland Scenics "Realistic Water" with some green, brown and black ink added.  Probably need one more layer, possibly two, to unify the water a bit more and also give it the appearance of a bit more depth.

Got a couple specialty pieces to finish, such as the mine and my pirate port, but this is likely the last terrain I'll be making for some time, due to upcoming job related relocation(s).  All in all, though, I have over 40 square feet of gaming surface including over 8 linear feet of coastline and 10 linear feet of river.  Should be enough to keep me gaming for the foreseeable future.
