Any suggestions for a good font?
« on: September 25, 2007, 01:28:46 PM »
After trying several times to paint names on the side of my Great War tanks, I have concluded that I don't have the skill for it, and have decided to come at it from another angle.

I'm going to try and make some transfers, and I wondered if anyone knew a good font to use? Initially my first thoughts were to use one of the various stencil-type fonts. But looking at pictures of the tanks in the Great War, they don't seem to have used this method when painting on tank names.

What I need is a bold, blocky no-frills font. Simple and clean.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Prof. What I was getting at was did anyone have ideas for a specific font. I've already got loads of fonts installed, plus bookmarks of various free font websites.

I was just being lazy, hoping one might spring instantly to someone's mind, and save me the 'legwork' of trawling through pages and pages of fonts.

In the mean time, I have compiled a shortlist of eight or so from my own PC that would work, but as yet nothing that really shouts out at me "This is the one!"

I'll keep looking.

Excellent. A truly lovely font, that has jumped to the top of the queue for consideration. Definitely in the top three. As I have three tanks, and I think a different hand would be responsible for each, it will probably get used. Looks scruffy enough that it might have been painted on by hand, yet not scruffy enough that it might have been painted by me.

Thanks, Pete. I had a feeling you might have a helpful answer. You always know about this type of stuff. And dinosaurs.

You're quite welcome, although now that I think about it I will apply the following caveat: It is the same font that GW uses for Imperium fluff. Quite a few Imperial Guard tanks will have bloviating slogans and names on them in Caslon Antique. Which is a shame, because I would hate to create those sorts of associations with your tanks. Caslon Antique is a font of considerable utility and beauty.

If this takes Caslon Antique off the table, I'll recommend Bolton. It's a near-Caslon serif font, created to mimic some of the nicer Edwardian fonts. It's also free from the designer, and comes with a variety of copperplates that go with it.

My dilettentish fontographic boosterism is a source of some annoyance to Rich, much as my dinosaur rants are to everyone else.

'Western' would look really nice as it's for WW1 tanks.

Prof, thanks for the URL!

Purely by chance, I now have some excellent fonts for personalising my Old West buildings & making my own "Wanted" posters  :)

Cheers,
Ian

Imperium fluff, eh?

Off the table? Quite the contrary. It will gain me cool points with the Warhammer-obsessed young Reginald.
