Barachan Pirates
« on: September 26, 2007, 06:56:18 AM »
The Evil Empire has just published pics of the upcoming miniatures for the Corsairs of Umbar (including a miniature of the Peter Jackson cameo character)

I think they are great to act as Barachan Corsairs in Hyborian Age battles... Can't wait to have Broadsword Adventures!

The pics can be seen here

GW are still producing good stuff for the Lord of The Rings range.  If these are plastics they could be a decent price and a nice bunch of bandits for any fantasy games.

The two above look like plastic troopers to me.

The ones below look like metal Heroes.

The one on the right is Peter Jackson!

I should've said, I do quite like them. Good "general purpose" figures to have. I reckon you could use them as all-round stand-by figures for lots of things.

Apparently they will be released as a boxed set of plastics for the the riff-raff &  the usual blister pack in metal for the characters.

A message on the  "GW Middle Earth" Yahoo Group has the following info from a reliable chap who has seen the figures:

"Counting the models in the case the shield / spear / bowmen come in the ratio 8/8/8 so you can be pretty sure they are plastics. The Captain and Bo’sun come with alternative weapons so my guess is a blister with the two of them and a weapon sprue."

So, that's very good news if you need lots of Barachan Pirates, as the plastics are much more affordable than their metal LOTR figures :)

I know I'll be buying at least two boxes......

Cheers,
Ian

I think they look more like Zaporoskan/Vilayet pirates than Barachan ones, myself. They have a slight air of "fantasy cossacks" about them. Or maybe I'm just imagining it because I want them to be Reavers of the Vilayet :)

You are right... They have a strong "oriental" feeling that makes them good for Zaporoskan pirates. However, with different paintjobs and a little epoxy, they could do good caribbean-barachan pirates, too.

One of the wonderful things about the people of Hyboria is that they can be visually interpreted in so many different ways. I'm actually thinking of representing pirates of the western ocean with Nile Arabs from Perry's Colonial Sudan range:

A few head swaps should make them look more multi-ethnic, like a mix of Hyboreans, Shemites, Stygians and people from the Black Kingdoms. Their clothes also look like the kind of garments I imagine these dishevelled pirates wearing.

Indeed... John Buscema never drew clothes more complex than those, even for aquilonian soldiers
