"The Griffon", my Pirate Ship.
« on: March 01, 2011, 07:24:34 AM »

Finally got around to finishing this up, my first toy conversion was a learning process, next up I am taking on a pair of mega bloks ships
with all the great ideas I've seen here, and the experience from this under my belt.
if you're interested in the details on the Griffon...they are all listed here http://plasticlegions.blogspot.com/2011/02/griffon.html

I am impressed, very impressed. This is so amazing, I mean, who can resist a nicely done pirate ship?

That is brilliant, you can almost hear the timbers creaking and waves lapping against the hull.

The ship looks great! Your blog is awesome by the way I must have rummaged around it for an hour today. (I fell on the other side of 8th edit warhammer by the way. The victory point system ruined it for me.Which is fine as it led me to reach out to new game systems!) I will also be purchasing those pirate books you mentioned, that or sneak past or kill your armed guards and steal them from you.

Ahoy Old Coast!
a fine vessel ye be master of.
Makes me wonder if the toy company that Walt Disney made that Radio controlled ship from actually conceived it would find a more revered spot in the miniatures gaming community. I bought one myself but have yet to get to the conversion process.

Thank you all for the comments , I am much obliged

@ Herby- its a disney RC toy..if you go to the link blog posts..there is a link to where you could get one

@ Ninja- thanks man!...yeah 5 years of Hobby chronicles up there so far...I feel the same way about WFB 8th scoring
(and have written about it) I still play mainly for the social aspects of hanging with all the great guys I know that play.
just play a lot less and try to play lot more skirmish these days

@-Wingnut-  I can say without a doubt, your boats are hands down the best I've ever  seen...so I appreciate very much
you compliment. I am going to try your sail technique on my next two Ship projects! :)

Old Coast,
How did you make the furled sails on this ship? Green-stuff? I like those.
Also do go to  any conventions in the Kansas City or Nashville area? I have considered running a large game in the KC shows, and David Raybin runs a good sized pirate game at NashCon I played in last year.

it would be nice to get some of our 28mm Pirate ships together on the same board.

This is the Game David ran in Nashville, my early ships on the table are diminished by the models he used but I'm trying to catch up. I was fortunate enough to be choose by my side as Commodore of the Black Fleet, my friend Cody the Admiral of the Red fleet. it was a great inspiration to the game I am constructing.

All my sails except for the main sails on the main mast and foremast are plastics poached from boats in the pressman games
weapons and warriors playset (a toy set from the 90's)  the mains are direct knock off of those and made of GS.

I really only do Chicago local conventions, in fact- if you are into Pirates I am running the the Legend of the High Seas event
at Adepticon here in the Chicago area at the end of the month. Unfortunately no ship vs ship action as we dont have the room this year- just the "boarding action" scenario between "The Griffon" above and an Old Glory Pirate Hunter my friend tim is currently decking out. called "the Wicked Wench"

That pirate game you link to looks great!, what a great variety of ships...I'll keep my eyes open for good events like that in the future

Wonderful ship.  Inspiration is a word that's used a lot, but this has inspired me.  For several years now I've been picking up this Black Pearl and its larger sister with the rocker bottom  at my local swap meet but beyond a little tinkering here and there I haven't really gotten to work on any of them.  Now I think I will!  One question:  the Griffons and scrolls on the stern, please tell me where the griffons came from and how did you make the scrolls assuming that they are scratch built.  Again, wonderful job.  Loved your website site as well.  Thanks. Richard
