Looking for 54mm or larger Greek Weapons/Shield
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:27:48 AM »
Hey folks,

I'm a 28mm kinda guy, I don't mess with larger scales at all.  However, I recently bought a couple of Minotaurs off of Ebay, and I love them - they're both about 60mm tall.  They're also both open-handed and unarmed.

I'm looking for a 54-60mm scale Greek shield to arm them with, and a large Greek spear and sword, too (one will have spear and shield, the other will have sword and shield).  I could probably fabricate a spear myself out of putty and brass rod, but an embossed shield is beyond my sculpting ability.

I assume that somewhere on the diorama or historical market there's a source for 54mm+ Greek historical weapons and shields?  Anyone here have any suggestions for me?

You could email the guys at Alternative Armies about their 'Typhon' Range. They might have some parts cast up for the sculptors they would sell you.

Hmmm... wow.  Those Typhon figures are thick, crude sculpts.

I'm pretty sure that my Minotaurs are Tom Meier sculpts, very detailed.  Here's the figure with a Boar's head instead of the bull head (the figure originally came with two heads):

The shield and sword on this Achilles figure might be useful - anyone know how easily removable they are?

There are quite a few manufaturers of 54/60 mm figures out there. mostly they make kits, but many of them sell parts for cutomizing. I don't really do the larger scale stuff, but I do run across these companies when browzing for smaller minis. I frequently browse the manufactuers list at TMP.

That looks pretty good.  A little small maybe for a 60mm tall figure - buckler sized, but it's a good shield.  I may have to order one on spec.  I was also looking at their shield for the Mjolnir the Ogre.

Have you tried Irregular Miniatures http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/ ?  They have 54mm Ancients http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/54mmRanges/54mmAncients.htm and Gladiators http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/54mmRanges/54mmGladiators_copy%281%29.htm that may have something to help.

To navigate around the site use the first link as the pages are framed  :-[

I've not seen them at shows so cannot say if they have separate weapons etc.

Edit: Just found http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/54mmRanges/54mmScenics.htm - Part way down it states shields at 50p

Be selective!

Have a look around first!

I'm not keen on the Skellies or the Hoplites with no helmets, but the ones with helmets are actually pretty nice figs.

Another option is definately Irregular miniatures.

And here's a much better picture of the Minotaur/Beastman that I've got -

Apparently still available from Iron Wind!

@Rob - Man, I disagree with you.  Look at the detail on that Achilles figure - then at those Typhon.  They're about the same scale, but the level of detail and the quality of sculpting are light-years apart.  If the Typhon were 15mm or smaller I'd be willing to accept that kind of blunted, thick anatomy (fingers?), but on large scale figures, absolutely not.  I don't think they'd have been good figures 20 years ago, and certainly not today.

Yo AB,

I don't know if you've seen these but it's a hoplite that Tom Meier had for sell a few years back at Gen Con. You might check with him to see if still has any. I'll be sending this one to you, if you'd like it, in the next cross-continent package.

Be good,

Brian

Yo B-Dawg - I would love that Hoplite, his shield looks perfect.  I'm certain that I'll drive myself to distraction trying to paint something fancy on it.  And I bet I can find some use for the Hoplite himself, too.
