The Spirit
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:50:04 PM »
While we all hold our breath waiting for LPL V to begin, here's a little side project that I was working on while I did my entry for round 1 (which caused my round 1 entry to become my entry for round 2... ::)). Will Eisner's The Spirit:

Some of you may recall my surprise that there was no Heroclix version of The Spirit in this thread:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=23085.msg285740#msg285740

So I converted up my own.

I haven't read the comic, but this figure is quite nifty.

Just keep it away from Frank (I'm a nutbag) Miller and it should go great.

The legs, torso and head are from the Heroclix Pete Wisdom figure. The arms and the hat are from the Heroclix Renee Montoya Question figure. I also resculpted the figure's mouth to improve the appearance. Here's a WIP photo showing the conversion:

Excellent work; can we expect more supers from you after (or even during?) LPL?

Wow! :o

Really good conversion and painting. Reminds me of "The Spider" novels too, only his costume was black instead of blue.

For those of you unfamiliar with the original comic:

Who is the chica in the background of the picture?  Ally, foe, or minor character?

Interesting that her clothes were the same color theme, more or less.  Or did the color artist just like blue?

Trivial, I know...

Gracias,

Glenn

The Spirit comic strip is full of various femme fatales, although the one in the picture appears to be a generic one, not one of the regular roster of sexy love interests, allies and vilainesses (P'Gell, Sand Saref, Silk Satin, Dr. Silken Floss, Ellen Dolan, etc.).

The picture shown is significantly under-colored. I think the red & blue shown on the chica are just there to save on ink. The Spirit almost always does wear an iconic blue suit, blue mask, and blue gloves with a red tie and hatband. Even when the Spirit is in disguise in the strip those colors tend to continue throughout.

The Spirit actually works better in black & white (as in the classic Warren Comics re-issues of the 1970s) as the strips were consciously designed with a chiarascuro film noir sensibility.

Excellant - lovely work.  Hard to believe you started with the fig in the later pick, looks very soft detail in places.

Thanks, that was the challenge with this figure. In my experience, repainting Heroclix figures is always fraught with peril, as not only are many of the sculpts sub-par, but you never know what you're going to get in terms of gunky factory paint-jobs. If I had to do it over again, I might do a complete headswap, rather than trying to fix the deficiencies of the Pete Wisdom head with putty and paint.
