Newly Painted Galloping Major Stuff
« on: March 16, 2011, 12:09:32 PM »
Actually not so newly painted.  I finished these a few weeks ago, but I hate taking pictures so I procrastinated! A regular painting customer sent me one of everything from Galloping Major to paint for his own F&I collection.  I'm still working on the Huron. Unfortunately my sub-par photography and and painting has not done these figures justice. The sculpting style is different than Perry and Conquest, but I think they will mix together well on the table. I plan to start adding these in to my own collection once I catch up on my personal backlog.

First up is a comparison shot. From left to right we have GM, Conquest, and Cavalcade.

Next the rangers. I painted these as Gage's.

Canadian Militia:

And my favorites, the Iroquois:

Close ups of a couple of the Iroquois. As you can see, they ooze character. Ideally I would have spent a little more time on the bead work though.

I still have the hurons and then a bunch of Cavalcade F&I figures to get through for the same client. I have to say I'm not too keen on the Cavalcade stuff. The proportions are odd on some of them and the poses can be very unnatural. The comparison between them and the GM offerings is pretty stark. It is obvious that GM knows the period and has handled a musket while!

Excellent work, I really like what you've done.  I'm at work right now, but I'll have a closer look at lunch.

Thanks for posting, I'm working on a large lot of GallopingMajor stuff right now, this will continue to feed my imagination and help me figure out how to paint details.

Keep it up!

Upon closer inspection, still great stuff to look at.  I'm beginning a project and need as much inspiration for different details as I can get.  I'm not creative, but I know what I like and can reproduce that.  Photos like yours give me lots of great ideas.

Lots of character in these, let's see the rest when you finish them.

I'm interested to see the Cavalcade war games stuff, it doesn't really look fantastic, but it has the advantage of being the only snow shod range out there.  But with no Indians, there's not much you can do with that.

Thanks! The two books of collected Griffing prints are fantastic sources of inspiration. Unfortunately they seem to go for quite a bit these days, but if you keep your eyes peeled you might get lucky. I picked up the first volume in a used book store for only $20 a few years back!

Randy Steele is a semi-local artist who has some useful pieces on his site, too.

Great painting on some very nice sculpts. The Galloping major range is fast becoming in my opinion the best F&I range out there.

Wow  :-* :-* :-*

Superb work Aaron. What a treat for me to see so many of my figures so wonderfully painted appearing "all in one go". And thank you so much for the kind comments.

:D Oh yes, I find it helps, lots of muskets, pistols, rifles .........

Very nice! :-*  And I agree with you on the Cavalcade stuff... the poses are just odd... especially on how some of them are holding their muskets.  I bought the first four rangers and will not buy any more... they just don't look right and don't fit in with other miniatures.

Really great brush work.

I like the figures also. Will delve the interwebz for them.

Excellent work - really like the rangers, always good to see them in other colours than all green!

Thanks again everyone! I was glad Joe told me not to paint them green as I've always had a soft spot for the 80th. I'm planning to add these to my own pile and since my Conquest rangers are in green I plan to paint mine as the 80th also. Particularly useful as I want to use them for the later Pontiac's rebellion actions. Interestingly enough they may have switched to red coats (possibly faced in purple!) by then.

I'll second that, HM Independent Companies of Rangers (Rogers') seem to be the main "default" FIW Rangers, but it's nice to see some of the colonial ranger companies represented. I also have a soft spot for Dunn's New Jersey Company of Rangers, and find the mention of Israel Putnam's company in brown coats and green waistcoats (by late war at least) intreagueing - see the rangers painting guide on the website if you haven't already.

Aaron, I really like the 80th Foot too - keep an eye on the studio page  ;)
