Brink of Battle: Skirmish Gaming through the Ages
« on: March 21, 2011, 12:08:28 AM »
Hey guys.  Here are a few photos we shot from our game of  Brink of Battle: Skirmish Gaming through the Ages that Drew and I played the other day.  We just used the Period 1 rules with fantasy miniatures.  Drew used his Wood Elves, and I my Dark Elf Scouts.

We are creating our own fantasy world, for when I release the Scifi/Fantasy expansion next year.  So we just used the rules that will be available in October 2011.

Hi Faust, game looks good. Perhaps you talked about you miniature game before I signed up to the forum but can you give me a run down. Is it skirmish, large battles, will you be selling it, etc. Tell us a little about it.

Thanks Damien.  I'll get a description together when I'm less tired.

Ok, here's the skinny:

Strike Force Commander is my Man-to-Man, small unit skirmish wargame for between 3-20 models per player.

I wanted a playable WWII skirmish game that let you personalize each model, akin to Necromunda or Mordheim, but that also had more dynamic tactical tension than those IGOUGO systems.

Once I started writing, I realized that the only thing functionally different from a Hoplite and a Fallschirmjager was their training and equipment.  So I turned SFC into an All Historical Periods wargame.

I will release it on Lulu in October.  I got my copyright last year, and have decided to add a Campaign system to it as well, since it was just a one off tourney type design initially.

Now that I'm incorporating Campaign play into the main rulebook instead of as a stand alone supplement, I have a little more work to do.

On the heels of the Rulebook will be my Epic Heroes supplement that gives players the ability to create their own Fantasy/SciFi/Pulp/SuperHero/Post Apocalpse/etc game worlds and Strike Forces.

The beauty of the system is that it allows you total usage for historical or non-historical play.  No restrictions or debates about what you can and can't have, since everybody pays the same points for their Ratings, Traits, & Gear.

I will keep the LAF members well informed of the release, since it can be used to play EVERY type of miniatures adventure found here!

The Darkelf Scouts are really great. No doubt the most characterful DE from that entire range, and very characterfully painted.

Thanks.  I love 'em.  But currently I'm prepping my Marauder Reiksguard for painting.   They are my faves!

Hi Faust, sounds like it is going to be a fun game. Of course you know, you are talking about the holy grail of game systems; writing a rule set that can handle all time periods and scenarios. I for one am curious to see how you pull if off :)  let us know when it is ready (and show us some cover/concept art when you have some).

Yes Damien, I understand the task at hand.  And since we've successfully play tested all three periods: 1. Ancient/Medieval; 2.Early Modern; and 3. Modern  and they play to everyone's satisfaction, I am pretty confident I pulled off a miracle.

I'll definitely keep you updated on release info and sneak peeks.

add me to the interested group.

Just a question: is this a D6 system or do you use different types of dice?

Thanks, and keep us informed of any update.

Best wishes.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

All periods? Fantasy, modern, and sci-fi?

I'm guessing the system will be closer in weight to SOBH than Havoc. I'll be interested to see your updates.

D10 system.  Three Historical Periods: P1- Ancient/Medieval (3000BC to 1450AD); P2- Early Modern (1450AD-1880AD); P3 - Modern (1880AD-Present)

The first supplement, Epic Heroes will add Period 4 - Future.  It will also have rules for creating your own Fantasy/SciFi/Pulp etc worlds/campaign.  You'll be able to play a High Tech future with gritty realism, or add fantastical elements like Aliens and Psionics.

Later I'll release an SFC turnkey Fantasy background, followed by SciFi down the road. That's for those players that either don't have the time or the interest in developing their own homegrown game worlds.

You will be able to take any minis from your existing collection, and play any type of game you want.  On April 20th I will have been working on this for 5 years.  I think you'll be as pleasantly surprised as my play testers are.

Oh, and you don't have to rebase any models!  It is designed to work with rounds or squares and all scales from 20mm up to 54mm.

In the next couple of months I'll set up a blog site for the game.  I'll let you all know when that's good to go.

Mate, if this is half as good as it sounds I'll file for divorce and marry you!

...or I might restrain myself and leave it at calling you a top fellow!

How many models per side does an average game take? And how long to play an average game?
