Legends of the Old West at Con of the North (picture heavy)

Shootout at Cotton Gulch

My brother and I ran the following Legends of the Old West game at Con of the North in Minnesota, Feb 19th.

The scenario involved 6 players, each running posses with their own objectives.  Along with receiving points for taking “enemy” posse members out of action, each posse had a major and minor objective that would gain them additional points.  The major objectives of each posse were known to everyone but the minor objectives were kept secret so no one knew exactly what everyone else was up to.

The posses involved were: Lawmen, Citizens Vigilance Committee, Cowgirls, Cowboys, Banditos, Outlaws.

Convention book description:
Tensions are running high in the town of Cotton Gulch as outlaws, lawmen, vigilantes and cowboys descend on the town, each with their own agenda. Sure as shootin' there’s gonna be gunfire as the groups confront each other on main street. Take control of one of the provided posses and try to stake your claim as the baddest hombres to ever set foot in Cotton Gulch.

The Town of Cotton Gulch.

The players prepare for the mayhem to begin.

Banditos

Cowboys

Outlaws

Cowgirls

The Undertaker prepares for a boom in business.

The outlaws draw first blood when they gun down a member of the Town Vigilance Committee.

Townsfolk on the main street.

Deputy Ed Short takes up position on the roof of the jail.

A view down main street.

Sheriff Buck Wheeler and his deputies lay down the law.

Cowboys linger at the Saloon and get drunk.

Two banditos take cover behind a horse, until it is shot dead.

Preacher Jebediah Murphy leads the Town Vigilance Committee.

The Cowgirls open fire on the Town Vigilance Committee, but are all but annihilated by the return fire.

Part Two.

Granny Smith opens a can of whupass on the Cowgirls.

Banditos intimidating one of the townsfolk.

Cowboys still milling around the Saloon.

The Outlaws sneak down the alley towards the back of the jail.

Still on the roof, Deputy Ed Short scans the street for targets.

The carnage in the street.

The Town Vigilance Committee moves towards the Telegraph Office to protect the safe inside that contains all the cash from the Orphanage Fund.

Whistlin' Joe Porter dives for cover in the water trough.

The Banditos and the Town Vigilance Committee battle for control of the Telegraph Office and the cash inside.

A shootout between the Lawmen and Cowboys breaks out in front of the jail.

The Outlaws step back after they plant dynamite against the jail wall in order to free members of their gang being held there.

The explosion takes out the wall and the two prisoners being held in the adjacent cell.

Jodi, the leader of the winning Citizens Vigilance Committee points out her impressive tally.

The buildings are a combination of scratch built, Old Glory, Arnica Real Estate, Ertl Cown Town, and O scale railroad.  Check here for more complete info on the buildings

Lovely table and figures!

Laughed when I read that the outlaws blew up the prisoners as well as the jail wall! I guess they hadn't seen the original Italian Job?

What were the posses objectives?

Lovely table and figs! Very nicely done. Not a fan of the rules though.

Thanks,

Thanks for the positive comments.  It was definately a fun game to run.  The players all got into the spirit of the scenario, had fun and that's what made it so enjoyable.

Quote
What were the posses objectives?

The major objectives were provided to each player in the form of  "General rumors heard around town."

General Rumors:
-The Banditos are coming to town to steal the Orphanage Fund from the Telegraph Office.
-The Lawmen are escorting an important prisoner to the jail.
-The Cowboys are fixing to rustle the Cowgirl’s herd of horses from the Livery.
-The Citizens Vigilance Committee is gathering at the Telegraph Office to protect the Orphanage Fund.
-The Cowgirls are heading to the Surveyor’s Office to dispute the Cowboy’s claim on their land.
-The Outlaws aim to rescue the prisoner that the Sheriff is escorting to jail.

Some of the secondary mission were as follows:

- Get two cowboys drunk in the saloon.
- Escort the randomly moving Townsfolk to safety.
- Intimidate the randomly moving Townsfolk by engaging them and beating them in hand to hand. And get bonus points by intimidating more than your rival. (Outlaws and Banditos)
- Keep NPC prisoners locked up in jail and alive.
- Bust up the saloon.

Players also received points for putting members of others players psses out of action.  Some also received bonus points for each of their rival posse members they took out of action.

We wanted there to be as much chaos on the table as possible, and the players provided it in spades.  I have 20 casualty models to put down when someone goes out of action, and we ran out of them before the game was over.

Sounds great, the confusion provided by secondary objectives must have made for some serious interaction.  :o

Not the world's biggest table but perfectly scaled. Super building, I especially like the hotel.
