Scorpion, the real deal
« on: October 06, 2007, 10:14:58 PM »
Last week, I was given a dead scorpion in a jar of denatured alcohol, with the comment, "I bet you can make a mold of this...". I felt a bit uneasy at first, but then I thought, my shoes are made of leather, I've got a leather trousers (which doesn't fit anymore, unfortunately), I eat meat every day, so what the heck. And he died a natural death, as far as death after spending life in a terrarium could be considered natural for a scorpion.

To cut a long story short, I made a mold and cast him in resin, and here he is:

Detail of the mandibles:

I am working with the materials for almost three years now, every day, but I have to say that I am really enthusiastic about the amount of detail that is transferred into the cast. Even those tiny hooks at the feet were reproduced, and I am especially impressed with those mandibles.

Anyway, he is about 7 cm long, so I guess he could be of use as a giant scorpion...

Sir, yes, Sir! Cast one scorpion for Grimm, affirmative, Sir!

Lurch and Ironworker, I hope to get the production molds ready after Spiel '07, i. e. in two weeks, and I hope to put him in the shop in time for Crisis. There is still a bit of work to be done, Mother Nature did not consider all those molding problems during the sculpting  :freak:

That is brilliant. Makes you wonder what else could be duplicated in this fashion. Who needs sculptors anyway?  8)

White knight, I had exactly the same thoughts  :) Thank god we don't have any cockroaches around here, but if anyone could send me a nice juicy specimen, I'd be very grateful  A stag-beetle would be cool, too. Or probably a giant locust, but I'll stop now.

Knoxville, here you go:

Miniatures are Westwind London thug, converted Foundry gangster, and one of my own.

I need to make some changes for the production version, though. The original mold is already deteriorating, it has just too many undercuts and fiddly bits to be feasible.

Yeah,I thought I saw some pieces of black rubber from the mould clinging to it. I hope you can sort it out, because I'll definitely be wanting one.

If you get it in time for crisis, I'd even be able to pick it up there.  8)

Ahem. That's not mold material, these are part of the ... master model  The body was pretty much desecrated during the first demolding.
