Very good article.
I never done a thatch roof. I wanted to do it for 15mm ww2 but I was too lazy so I bought houses from Hovels. With your tutorial I will try a 28 mm house in the future.
Thanks
Björn

You can see my post on your Weird War II topic, but I plan on trying out the towel technique this weekend. Hopefully have some pictures of it to share next week.

Very good indeed. I have avoided the towel version because the original article I read made it look really messy and awkward.

You have changed my mind and I'll be giving it a go with my Vietnam buildings, thus saving me hundreds of pounds because I won't be buying big resin ones :)

Brilliant!

Oh, I spotted a typo

- 'At this point it iw worth going in to a few key differences between cut cardboard and an old towel.'-

iw for is.

Okay, I have started my thatch roof project. I will get a picture up later this weekend once it is completed. But here are a couple of thoughts so far:

1.) Like Matakishi said, it can be very messy. The towel stuff gets everywhere when cutting. But that's not a big deal to me as I have a basement work area.

2.) My huts are round and cutting a piece of towel for a round (slightly conical shape) was not easy.

3.) It looks NOTHING like thatch when you are first putting the towel on. I couldn't believe this was going to work. But, after getting the glue and first coat of brown paint on, it really started to look right. I think this is going to turn into an awesome looking and easy to use technique for a thatch roof.

Okay, here is my nearly complete thatch roof. It just needs some ivory drybrushed onto it.

My new preferred metod for a thatch roof is the towel method. I love how it looks and how quick and easy it was.

That roof looks great! I really like how you covered up most of the black in the recesses, it really makes the roof look like a lighter shade of grass...  I may have to consider repainting some of mine :)

I was wondering: Which colours do you guys use for thatch? I've been experimenting with a paint-guide by the G(reat) W(itchdoctor), but I am not happy with the result....

I use craft paintes (those cheap paints you get in DIY/craft stores).

I start with a black primer. Then I do a dark brown (like chestnut brown). I then drybrush with a pale yellow. Finally I do a lighter drybrush with a combination of the pale yellow and an off-white.
