rock texture
« on: June 19, 2011, 04:11:23 PM »
some of you may remember my quarry build
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=19975.0

well, that stalled as I became increasingly unhappy with the rock faces... they work as rock, but were softer than I really wanted... I came to realise I really wanted sharp edges and the whole thing stalled...

now I've been giving it some thought lately, checking out various techniques online for wargaming and railroad set ups... bearing in mind I'll be building up on my existing structure, I needed a 'cladding' finish... thought of bark bits, but too irregular... thought of the plaster in crinkled foil, but too heavy and thick... however, I have been pondering something of a variation on that...

has anyone tried crinkled crepe paper (balled up and then gently flattened out) as a rock/cliff surface? as long as it's loosely laid and the creases kept or emphasised on a good coat of PVA, it should be hard enough and still give that rock cleavage/fracture look... essentially papier mache I guess...

I've been thinking about this for a while now, but don't have made any experiments yet.

I think that "toilet paper" will do the trick too.

My plan is to give the foam a quick paint with watered white glue, lay the paper and give a second coat of watered glue.

Crepe paper may work even better, as the paper has certain texture by itself.

Maybe is time to try it, but right now I'm painting a bunch of miniatures, and terrain making will have to wait a little longer.

Best wishes.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

I'm trying a similar approach at the moment - styrofoam rocks covered with paper napkins, then covered with very fine sand. So far, I'm rather pleased with the results.

I just went and checked out your other post, it would be awesome if you could share how you shaped and textured your stone!

just cut and shaped the blue foam as normal and then pressed in texture with real rock... it works, but the finish is a little too worn and rounded... I want something more sharp edged...

just a quick pj but looks ok... is what I was looking for, something that looked jagged and sheared, with possible tiny hand holds climbing up...

bearing in mind, there will also be blocks defined in the bluefoam that are absent here... should be good...

Looking good.

So... That's crepe paper over foam?

I went with normal craft paper in the end... tissue paper essentially... 30 sheets for a quid or something off ebay...

You can also bash real rocks into foam to replicate the texture. Looking forward to seeing this, I remember it was quite impressive already!
