Malifaux - Freikorps crew complete! 8/7
« on: June 29, 2011, 12:19:44 PM »
Painted this guy up yesterday to get a feel for the Freikorps miniatures and to see if my ideas for color choices would work. More models of the "Freikorps" will follow once I get some matt varnish sometime this weekend.

More pictures on my blog:

I like it but I'd give the mask a little more colour, possibly bringing the green from the other armour pieces in. At the moment it's blending with the chest armour. At least in the picture..
So many projects..... so little time.......

Since you mentioned ordering the Frekorps Guys, I've been looking forward to your rendition; I'm not disappointed...the test piece looks TERRIFIC. I like the stripe idea for differing between the types. VERY NICELY DONE!

Thanks guys. About the mask, I wanted them to be of the same "material" as the armour. Since the lenses are green I'm not sure about making the masks green as well. Though I might think about it for the Trapper models.

Ah, hadn't noticed the green lenses, fair point. It could well be the angle of the shot, so I wouldn't worry about it. It's a lovely looking figure.

I quite like the Malifaux Freikorps models myself, I think that you have made a promising start.

For my part, I would consider adding some white and red to the mask/helmet and some red around the ankles. Right now the bottom half of the model is very white and the upper half is very black and you've got nice red details at the wrists but nowhere else and I think it affects the visual balance of the model.

I would also consider changing the red hilt on the dagger. Red is such a strong color and the rest of the model has such muted neutral tones that the eye is drawn to the wrist areas more than perhaps it should be.

Might as well share what I have painted so far as I won’t have matt varnish this weekend after all.

Painted so far, Von Schill, 2 Freikorpsmenn, 1 Librarian, 1 Trapper. Left to paint 2 Freikorpsmenn, 1 Specialist and a second trapper.

Pictures on all models individually can be seen on my blog.

Lovely work so far, wasn't to sure on seeing first figure, think it was the angle. But the squad picture is great, a really nice cohesive force, love the blue and white check.

INSPIRING STUFF! These minis along with the rest of your Malifaux project have gotten me planning some strangeness of my own. It's all your fault...thanks.

Great to hear DeafNala, you have some particular project in mind or just weird stuff in general? I find this forum to be very dangerous for my wallet. There is so much crazy cool looking projects here on LAF that it is imo easily the most inspiring internet forum I've been a part of myself  :)

I agree; L.A.F. even beats out T.B.M.F. for pure inspiration. As far as spending goes I could paraphrase Herodotus: "when I have money I buy minis...if there's any left, I buy food."

The differing elements that make up Maifaux as Nathan describes it, come pretty close to what I'm aiming at; just lacks some Tim Burton, a dash of Jim Henson, & a healthy dose of Bugs Bunny.I just have to take 50 years of things I love about gaming & minis & come up with a cohesive whole. I have a some really poor photos of where I'm headed here:

While I quite understand and agree from the point of view of the art of miniatures, I'd have to strongly disagree with it's execution, as these seem the very points that would appeal to these fellows. The misdirection at the wrists seems intentional, and not a bad strategy.

By the by, someone asked two years ago, but you didn't respond, 'I like it too! Deafnala....what is TBMF?'

Tom's Boring Mordheim Forum? (Google are my friend.)

LAF doesn't threaten my wallet, merely my self-esteem, nay, my very sanity. I look at my unfinished projects, and single post by PM has me undone! Gibbering, I say!

Thanks again for all the interest guys. The hilt on the daggers (?) have been changed to bestial brown. Rest remains the same as I quite like it. My biggest problem will be to come up with a clever way to differentiate the identical miniatures (double Freikorpsmenn blister). I'm not too keen to paint names on these guys bases like I did on my Resurrectionist stand in models.

Maybe some small color marking on the back of the bases?

I have only 2 more models to paint , which is quite nice, even though the flow is much better now 7 models in - last Freikorpsman was painted in about 3 hours compared to 5 on my test model (though lot of time was spent figuring out colors), these models are not the most "relaxing" type of models I've painted. I kind of just want to finish this gang and move on to paint some Blood Bowl Orcs.

Anyway, I will post a tutorial/guide on how I painted these guys tomorrow as I took pictures today while painting.

@ DeafNala those are really cool. Saw some of those earlier in the Fantasy forum. I even showed the tree you made for my friend who was making terrain for Malifaux. He ended up making a couple of twisted "face trees" and one big stump with twisted face  :)
